This is what our setup looks like when we aren’t rolling around racks of wedding dresses! Earlier this month, Katie had the pleasure of talking with almost 200 friends from the central NJ area about what All Bodies, All Brides is and why inclusive language matters. Hosting conversations like this is our bread and butter 😉 We love to talk about disabled belonging, and we get all sorts of reactions when we do it…

🤔 Some people are hearing information for the first time. People come up to us afterwards, astonished that we don’t encouraging saying things like “special needs” or “handicapable” ❌❌❌
🥸 Some people are community advocates for inclusion in their own right, and are in disbelief that not everyone is on the same page as them!
🫨 Most tell us that they’re curious to learn more.

Where do you think you’d be in the crowd? How are you furthering your education on disability?

ABAB Community: We are asking you to help us help a couple in need!

This is Sabah (left, ) and Moamen (right, .) They have been engaged for four years and were planning on starting their lives together last year, before the war in Gaza intimately changed their lives. The house that Moamen had spent years of income and time preparing for them was instantly destroyed by bombs, and the pair immediately found themselves in a dire situation. Sabah, who previously was an instructor at Al-Aqsa University, found herself without the ability to work, and Moamen sustained a serious injury amid the violence which meant losing his ability to earn money as well. Right now, Sabah and Moamen are asking us for help recovering and surviving: they need enough money to purchase a tent and a few wedding items. In their own words, all they want is the chance to get married before their time runs out. Amidst limited food and shelter as the winter cold is settling in, please consider contributing to this couple's GoFundMe, (which is donation protected like all donations on its platform!), accessible through the link in our bio and on our story!

Let us be people who think about marriage access everywhere. Thank you for reading friends, share as you are able!

Image Description: A nice photograph of Sabah and Moamen, perhaps an engagement photo. They appear to be in a destroyed building that still has furniture in it, but they are holding each other. Moamen is smiling at the camera while Sabah is shyly turned away. She is wearing a long beige dress with cherries embroidered on it with a coordinating burgundy headscarf. He is wearing a teal long sleeved T-shirt and jeans.

For those of you who know ABAB personally, you probably also know Mark! Mark is the karaoke-singing, strikes-when-bowling, marvel-loving older brother behind the founding of ABAB. This month, while celebrating National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Mark and his manager were interviewed by Community Partnerships, Inc. Here, Mark got to share about his experience working in a Supported Employment position with a job coach. Check out the link in our bio to learn more!

Thinking this week about this quote from in her book, "Haben: The Deafblind Woman Who Conquered Harvard Law." What does it mean when we truly unsettle the narrative that disability is something that must be overcome in order for people with disabilities to be successful? What changes in our communities, our culture, our ways of moving through the world when we think about success as promoting accessible 'alternative techniques' rather than demanding assimilation?

Haben is going to be speaking at Parson's School of Fashion in NYC on October 16th from 7:00-8:00pm ET, and the event is both hybrid and free! You might just see us there as we keep reflecting 😉

Image Description: "Disability is not something an individual overcomes. I'm still Disabled. I'm still Deafblind. People with disabilities are successful when we develop alternative techniques and our communities choose inclusion." This quote is centered on screen and broken up by a photo of a book cover with Haben Girma (African American woman with dark hair, wearing a blue, short sleeve blouse, in profile view) in front of a red background.

Happy World Mental Health Day! Scroll through to learn a little bit about the history of what today stands for, why it is especially relevant to disability justice, and how you might choose to celebrate. What are you doing to take care of you today??

- - -
Image Descriptions:
• Slide One: Graphic of a happy brain wearing a crown is centered, surrounded by text: "Today, October 10th is World Mental Health Day!"
• Slide Two: Text oriented right: "Since 1992, World Mental Health Day has aimed to promote mental health advocacy, end the stigma around mental illness, prompt education on mental wellbeing, and mobilize self/communal care models! Depute Secretary General Richard Hunter, pictured on the left, founded this holiday while working for the World Federation for Mental Health." Round image of Richard Hunter, a white man wearing round wire glasses, sits in front of three pink vertical lines.
• Slide Three: Text block, centered: "Mental Health and Disability: Many mental health conditions can be understood as disabilities in and of themselves, especially when symptoms may be severe enough to negatively impact how a person conducts their day to day life. Additionally, research conducted by the CDC shows that adults with disabilities report frequent mental distress at five times the rate of their non-disabled peers. Given that the history of institutionalization (in the United States especially!) included and impacted people with mental health conditions alongside folks with other types of disabilities, we can understand disability justice advocacy and mental health advocacy as correlated subjects."
