Food insecurity is about much more than food.

Last month, we had the opportunity to facilitate a community focus group in East Durham, where residents shared their lived experiences and practical ideas for improving food access. Their insights reinforced that the challenges extend beyond having enough food, they include transportation, access to information, funding, storage capacity, and ensuring that solutions are rooted in the community.

Thank you to everyone who participated and shared your experiences, as well as our community partners who continue working every day to strengthen Durham’s food system. Your voices are helping shape the path forward.

to our visit last Friday to Peanut’s Pantry in East Durham.

More than 250 vehicles lined up for this drive-through food distribution by 6:30 AM, where volunteers helped load trunks with fresh produce and other essential food items for families across the community.

It was great joining the Charlotte-Mecklenburg League of Women Voters, along with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Climate Leaders, for an important discussion on the growing demand for and their impacts in Mecklenburg County.

Thank you to the League and former Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts for the invitation to serve on this panel. The room was full with a very astute crowd who asked great questions.

We enjoy being able to share information about the research we’ve been conducting related to the environmental and economic impacts of data centers.

We were in service this Saturday in Bahama learning from a local food access partner as part of Durham County’s Food System Assessment and 10-Year Strategic Plan.

Food systems are more than farms and grocery stores. They include the community organizations, volunteers, faith communities, and neighbors who help ensure people have access to nutritious food.

Our team is listening to residents and food system partners across Durham County to better understand:
🌱 how food moves through our communities
🗺️ where access barriers exist
🤝 what is working well
💡 opportunities to strengthen resilience for the future

Thank you to the volunteers and community members who welcomed us and shared their experiences. The knowledge and lived experiences of local partners are essential to building a food system that serves everyone.

Join our Principal, Kibri Hutchison Everett, the League of Women Voters of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, and Charlotte Mecklenburg Climate Leaders for an important discussion about the surging demand for data centers and their implications for our communities on Tuesday, June 23rd.

As AI and digital infrastructure continue to expand, communities across North Carolina are grappling with questions about energy demand, water resources, noise, land use, and quality of life, making it one of the most important infrastructure issues facing our region.

We’re excited to share that Key Environmental Consulting has been selected to support the City of Charlotte’s Landscape Management Division on an initiative that involves expanding street tree planting in neighborhoods.

Our work will focus on engaging with communities to identify new street tree planting locations across Charlotte to help:
• Expand tree canopy
• Reduce urban heat
• Improve air quality
• Support stormwater management
• Strengthen neighborhood resilience

We’re excited to contribute to Charlotte’s ongoing investment in nature-based solutions, green infrastructure, and healthier communities.

We look forward to working alongside community leaders and residents to help bring this effort to life.
