I founded Self-Empower Coaching to help professionals who are seeking not only success but also more satisfaction and significance in their career lives. Combining my own experience of several career transitions and a strong business background, I am well-equipped to help you if you are seeking a new job, a completely new career or if you are interested in starting a new business. My business background includes marketing, executive management and customer relations in both medium-sized and small emerging companies. I also spent a number of years in the educational field, first as a Business Instructor and then as the Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at a local community college. In both of these capacities, I advised and counseled students and clients about their careers or their small business ventures. It is in this capacity that I discovered my passion for helping people to uncover and embrace their purpose/passion and to align it with their career paths.

I once asked a project manager how much the company was investing in the project we were discussing.

They didn't know.

That doesn't mean they did a bad job. They might have done a great job. But they were missing context that would help explain why their work mattered.

Next important project, get curious:
* What problem are we solving, and why now?
* What's being invested?
* What does success look like?
* What's at risk if this slips?
* How does my piece fit in?

One caution: knowing it's a $5 million project doesn't mean you generated $5 million. Know the size of the ship and the size of your oar.

When I ask clients about accomplishments, many go hunting for a big shiny percentage.

Numbers help. But plenty of roles don't come with a revenue target or a clean way to measure financial impact.

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻'𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗶𝘁, 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱. Did a stalled project start moving? Was a customer relationship repaired? Did a recurring headache finally go away?

Specific, honest evidence beats an invented statistic every single time. Interviewers can smell a made-up number from across the table.

"That Was Just Part of My Job"

I hear this one constantly.

You resolved a disagreement that had a project stuck in neutral. You caught an error before it reached a customer. You kept an operation steady through a rough transition.
"That was just part of my job."

Sure. And a goalie stopping shots is just part of theirs. Nobody leaves it off the highlight reel.

Ask yourself: What did I improve, prevent, or make easier? What was I trusted to handle? What might have gone wrong if I hadn't?

Expected work is still work that mattered.

Rough bullets are fine. You're not writing a résumé yet. You're keeping the raw ingredients from going stale in the back of the fridge.

I recently reviewed a résumé from someone with years of solid experience.

It read like their job description. Duties, duties, more duties. What did they improve? Solve? Prevent? I couldn't tell.

Compare:
"Developed and implemented new processes."
vs.
"Identified recurring delays in customer onboarding, coordinated improvements across three departments, and cut processing time from three weeks to two."

The first one tells me you showed up. The second tells me why it mattered that you did.

The catch: you can't write the second version if you've forgotten the details. Write them down while they're fresh.

I once completely blanked in a job interview.

Eli Lilly, Indianapolis. The interviewer asked me to describe a conflict with a customer and how I handled it.

Nothing. Not one example. I had the experience. I just couldn't find it when it counted, like knowing your keys are somewhere in the house while your ride is honking outside.

The interview did not go well. The lesson stuck: experience you can't retrieve doesn't do you much good.

That's why I tell clients to build a career evidence bank before they need one.

Transferable Experience Requires Translation!

Transferable experience does not mean pretending two jobs were identical.

It means identifying the common challenge and explaining what carries over.
Building a department in one industry may not be the same as leading a team in another. But both may require creating structure, setting expectations, developing people, allocating resources, solving escalated problems, and supporting growth.
Employers may not make that connection for you.

You have to translate the relevance.
And you should be equally clear about what you would still need to learn.

That combination, transferable value without exaggeration, can make a much stronger case than simply matching job titles.

Customizing a résumé should mean more than replacing a few keywords.

The real goal is to build a credible bridge between what the employer needs and the value you bring.

That may mean highlighting an older position. A project from another industry. A leadership experience that was buried under an unrelated title.

The question is not simply:
How can I make my résumé sound more like this posting?

A better question is:
What evidence from my background best demonstrates that I can help solve this employer’s problem?

𝗔𝘀𝗸 "𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗚𝗼 𝗪𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴?"

A useful way to read a job description is to reverse the question.
Instead of asking only, “What will this person do?” ask:
What would go wrong if nobody did this well?

If the posting emphasizes cross-functional coordination, perhaps projects stall during handoffs. If it stresses record accuracy, perhaps mistakes create service problems. If it repeatedly mentions response times, perhaps responsiveness matters more than the generic wording suggests.

You are not claiming to know what is happening inside the company. You are forming a hypothesis you can investigate. That hypothesis can lead to stronger interview questions and better accomplishment stories.

Requirements Aren’t All Equal!

A long job description can make every qualification look equally important.
They usually aren’t.

Look for repetition.
If several responsibilities point toward improving operations, developing people, increasing revenue, strengthening customer relationships, or creating systems, you may have identified the employer’s real priority.

Once you know the priority, you can stop trying to prove everything.
You can concentrate on proving what matters most.
