We're familiar with the assumption that an organized home has to look a certain way: everything in a matching container, petit labels, everything tucked away. Basically, a showroom where nobody is allowed to actually live.

But organization and aesthetics aren’t competing ideas.

You can have systems that make your mornings easier, storage that actually makes sense, and a place for the things you use every day without making your home feel sterile or overly styled.

Sometimes the best organized spaces are the ones where you don’t immediately notice the organization, they just feel good to be in and everything works.

Back to school prep is a supply list, a shoe size, and a photo on the front steps…nobody puts a playroom audit on that list.

But that’s the room the school year actually runs through. It’s where everyone lands after school, where homework happens, and where all the stuff that comes home gets dropped.

The problem is, the playroom often hasn’t changed since the last school year. And neither has the way it’s organized.

A room gets set up for a four year old, and then somehow that four year old is seven. ⏰🤯 The dollhouse still has the best spot even though she hasn’t touched it in months, while the things she actually loves are getting shoved wherever they fit.

So they end up on the floor.

Kids change faster than rooms do. Sometimes the room isn’t messy because you’ve fallen behind. It’s messy because it no longer works for the kid who lives there.

These are five real playrooms, photographed right before school started. Same houses. Same square footage. The kids just grew up, and we helped their rooms catch up.

Every cluttered space started with one innocent little thought: “I’ll put this here for now.”

Then “for now” invited friends.

Now the flashlight lives with the measuring spoons, the tape measure disappeared in 2023, and opening *that* drawer feels like you’re accepting a challenge from the universe.

The fix is giving your stuff an address instead of letting it wander the neighborhood.. 😉

If school mornings have you playing “Where’s your…?” before you’ve had coffee, your landing zone deserves a little attention.

Before the school year starts, take 20 minutes to reset the space by your door:

✓ Turn your drop zone into a launch zone. If it doesn’t help your family get out the door, it probably doesn’t belong there.

✓ Create one spot for everything that needs to leave the house. Library books, permission slips, sports gear, birthday gifts. If it’s leaving with you, it lives there.

✓ Give yourself a “return to school” bin. Papers to sign, library books, and anything that needs to head back to school all have one home instead of bouncing between the kitchen counter and the dining table.

✓ Keep only what’s being used this season within reach. Outgrown shoes, last year’s backpacks, and winter coats can all be stored elsewhere until they’re needed.

✓ Leave one hook or cubby empty on purpose. It sounds backwards, but you’ll be glad it’s there when the random sweatshirt, science project, or soccer bag inevitably shows up.

✓ Keep a small backup stash nearby. Hair ties, sunscreen, bug spray, stain remover wipes, reusable bags, or an extra pair of socks can save the morning.

Your mornings don’t have to be perfect. They just don’t have to start with a scavenger hunt.

Save this for your back-to-school reset, and send it to the parent who’s always asking, “Does anyone know where your water bottle is?” 🤍
