Fist steps in creating a quail woods habitat for a client interested in wildlife management. Thinning out a stand where the average tree left is 18 to 20 inches in DBH, leaving about 30 - 35 trees per acre on the first pass. Will make a grooming pass through next week to remove select trees for the final stand.

May have found the perfect stand of timber for an almost 70 year-old forester to cruise! As close to a “park”as I think I will be able to find and sell! Average pine DBH is 20 inches. Coming to the market soon!

Emerald Ash Borer killed off almost all the mature ash trees in the Piedmont. However, I've seen a lot of juvenile ash trees coming back in the understory. Hoping that nature finds a balance and the ash trees can make a comeback.

Unexpected rain cut the prescribed fire short, but the NCFS was still able to get some acres burned. With any luck, tomorrow will work out better.
