The Q2 2026 CIRT data tells a nuanced story about where the built environment stands right now: sentiment and confidence down, backlog and costs up, the leadership gap widening.

Here are the numbers you need to know:

• CIRT Sentiment Index: 63.5 (down from 66.1 in Q1), with the Design Index falling to 69.6 from 72.0
• Confidence in the U.S. economy dropped sharply, to 39.8 from 53.3, but confidence in members' own construction business rose to 75.5 from 69.2
• The Backlog Index strengthened to 75.5 (up from 68.2), with 59% of members expecting backlogs to grow next quarter
• Material costs spiked: the Cost of Materials Index jumped to 94.9 from 73.3, with 90% expecting spending to rise
• On talent: only 35% of firms say their top emerging leaders are ready now or close to ready, while 65% place them two or more years away
