Can we conduct a recon using lidar? Let's find out!

I wanted preliminary information on a large property; most of the tract had been clearcut 20+/- years ago and a lot of it looked like it was scrubby hardwood.

I ran the script I used to analyze my drone flight to analyze recent lidar data taken on the property and collect stem density/height information. Hopefully after a little ground verification I'll be able to give the landowner a much clearer picture of what they have on their property.

Worked on rehabbing some trails this morning. Looking forward to planting food plots next week.

Leveled up some more. Flew a 100+ac property last week and was able to generate a point cloud to get a stem count for the property and height data for every tree.

Qualitatively, it did a great job counting trees in a thinned pine stand, a good job in unthinned pines and pulpwood-size mixed stands, and it only caught the very tallest trees in juvenile stands.

Height measurements were in line with a handful I took on the ground but I need to get a bigger sample size.

Next steps:
- see if we can improve accuracy in dense/mixed stands
- verify height measurements on the ground to ensure the heights estimates are accurate
- work on a height/dbh model so I can predict the diameter of every tree in the stand
- see if I can measure the crown widths in addition to tree heights.

We thinned this stand of loblolly pine earlier this year. The client's goals are to improve wildlife habitat and open up the understory for recreation and understory silvopasture/agroforestry projects.

Now that the firelines are in, we will be ready to conduct a prescribed burn as soon as the conditions are right. Goal will be to clean up the logging debris and promote herbaceous growth in the understory.

Wrapping up a great trip to the Association of Consulting Foresters national meeting in Baton Rouge. Had a good weekend of informative classes and got to meet some fantastic people from throughout the US.

Will be getting back to NC just in time for the heat wave.
