Happy Holidays to ALL! Great time to take a break - step back and appreciate those close to you. Great time to visit with friends and family. When doing so it is still a good time to make sure they know where you are on your search. Remember to ask for someone too talk to - it is all about the network. Also this time of year is all about helping and supporting people so relax - it is okay to chat about looking for employment. All the best!

While we have emphasized that the key to a great interview is confidence - this is true however; the ways you build confidence are many.

First, while someone can help you right your resume, you need to right the content someone else can help with format and grammar etc. 80% of the questions in an interview can be answered from your resume. If you own and write the content you will clearly have the knowledge and answers to those 80%.

Second, write down the 5 most difficult questions that scare the holy smokes out of you - then write down the answers. Notice I said write down - when you write them down you will remember the answers. To be clear - you will be asked at least 1 of them during the interview. So you know everyone has questions that make them nervous. If you are prepared for the most difficult questions just think about how simple the others will be.

Third - practice practice practice your interviewing with different people. Provide them with your tough questions so you can practice. This will help you understand how to use your resume and deal with the ugly questions. The feedback will be invaluable.

We all know how important your resume is when looking for a job. It is extremely important to note and remember that you are building your resume everyday with everything you do and everyone you connect with.

An example is - Someone asks for help on something that could negatively impact your business.

Remember to always start with 'how can I help you'?

Try to truly understand what the end goal is - which is always different then the how. If you can find common purpose in the goal it will make it easier to help and support.

If you can't find a common solution or goal, let them know that you would like to think about it. Seek advice from peers, management and mentors. In this way you will get good advice and alternatives to the solution that you can support.

If in the final analysis you can't help - then you have built support in your organization for your answer and you will know that you did all you could to help.

Most times the person or group asking for help will understand that you tried. Believe me this is much better then a flat NO!

Aside from networking the resume is the basis for a successful job search. The resume should be built around achievements - remember to save a copy of all your performance reviews so you can use them to create a powerful resume.
