SNAKE BITE: HOW DO WE TREAT IT? 🐍🐾

When a pet comes to us after a suspected venomous snake bite, treatment depends on the snake, location of the bite, symptoms, and severity.

At the clinic, treatment may include:
🩺 rapid examination and monitoring
💉 IV catheter and fluid therapy when indicated
💊 pain management
🧪 bloodwork and clotting tests
❤️ monitoring blood pressure and vital signs
🐍 antivenom when medically indicated
🏥 hospitalization and supportive care for more serious cases

Swelling and tissue damage can progress after the bite, so don’t wait to see what happens.

❌ Do not cut the bite, suck out the venom, apply ice, or use a tourniquet.
❌ Do not give human pain medications.

If you suspect a snake bite, keep your pet as calm and still as possible and seek veterinary care immediately.

SNAKE BITES IN NORTH CAROLINA: KNOW THE RISK 🐍🐶

North Carolina is home to several venomous snake species, and the risk can vary depending on where you live or travel with your pet.

📍 Piedmont & Raleigh area: Copperheads are the venomous snake dogs are most likely to encounter.

📍 Coastal Plain & Eastern NC: Copperheads, cottonmouths, and several rattlesnake species may be encountered.

📍 Mountains & Western NC: Copperheads and timber rattlesnakes are the main venomous snakes to be aware of.

⚠️ A snake bite can cause sudden swelling, severe pain, bruising, weakness, or difficulty breathing.

If you think your dog or cat has been bitten by a venomous snake, don’t wait for symptoms to get worse. Seek veterinary care immediately.

Keep pets on a leash around tall grass, brush, wood piles, rocks, and trails — especially during the warmer months. 🐾

BACK TO SCHOOL CAN BE STRESSFUL FOR YOUR CAT TOO 🎒🐱

Kids are going back to school, schedules are changing, and suddenly your cat’s familiar daily routine looks very different.

For some cats, stress can contribute to urinary tract problems, including feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC). In male cats especially, urinary problems can sometimes progress to a urethral blockage — a life-threatening emergency.

🚨 Watch for:
• frequent trips to the litter box
• straining to urinate
• producing only a few drops or no urine
• crying or showing pain in the litter box
• licking the ge***al area
• urinating outside the litter box
• vomiting, hiding, or becoming lethargic

⚠️ If your cat is repeatedly trying to urinate but little or no urine comes out, don’t wait. A urinary blockage requires immediate veterinary care.

Help reduce stress by keeping feeding and play schedules consistent, providing fresh water, clean litter boxes, quiet hiding spaces, and daily attention.

Back-to-school season is a change for the whole family — including your cat. 🐾

NORTH CAROLINA ALLERGY SEASON ISN’T OVER YET! 🐾🌿

Late summer can be especially uncomfortable for dogs with environmental allergies. In North Carolina, common triggers may include:

🌿 Grass and w**d pollen
🌾 Ragw**d and other late-summer pollens
🌳 Tree pollen
🍂 Mold spores, especially in warm and humid conditions
🏠 Dust mites and indoor allergens
🦟 Flea bites, which can trigger severe itching in sensitive pets

Watch for constant paw licking, scratching, red skin, recurring ear problems, or irritated eyes.

⚠️ Don’t wait until allergies lead to a secondary skin or ear infection. If your dog is an allergy sufferer, now is a good time for a preventive visit and to discuss a plan for keeping symptoms under control.

BACK TO SCHOOL… BUT WATCH WHAT YOUR DOG EATS! 🎒🐶

School season means new backpacks, notebooks, snacks — and lots of labels, stickers, wrappers, and plastic packaging around the house.

Unfortunately, dogs don’t always know what’s food and what isn’t. 🫣

Swallowed labels, plastic, snack wrappers, or pieces of packaging can become a foreign body and cause:
⚠️ vomiting
⚠️ loss of appetite
⚠️ abdominal pain
⚠️ intestinal blockage
⚠️ an emergency procedure or surgery

With kids heading back to school, check backpacks and lunch bags and keep small items and packaging out of your pet’s reach.

🌟 Meet Dr. Brandi Cordell! 🌟

We are excited to welcome Dr. Brandi Cordell to the team at Petsmart Veterinary Services Hospital & Urgent Care Raleigh!

A North Carolina native, Dr. Cordell grew up in Rocky Mount, NC before earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Cordell’s passion lies in general practice, preventive care, and surgery, with a special interest in making veterinary medicine accessible to every pet and family in our community. Her focus on community-based medicine and population health will help us expand services for pets who may not otherwise have access to veterinary care. As our practice continues to grow, Dr. Cordell will play an important role in strengthening our partnerships with local shelters and rescue organizations, supporting spay/neuter initiatives, and increasing access to affordable preventive care throughout the area.

Throughout her veterinary career, Dr. Cordell has worked with a wide variety of species, including small animals, large animals, and even zoo animals, giving her a unique perspective and broad range of experience.

When she’s not caring for patients, Dr. Cordell enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, tackling a good puzzle, and dancing like no one is watching. She also shares her home with her beloved dog, April, a Pit Bull/Labrador Retriever mix.

🐾 Sometimes we do everything we can… and it still isn’t enough.

This dog’s owner could not afford surgery. We did everything we could to help, including placing a cast and hoping the leg would heal without surgical intervention.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough, and the fracture did not heal as we had hoped. 💔

Sometimes veterinary medicine faces not only medical challenges, but financial ones as well. These cases are always the hardest to see.
