In 1937, Ruth Graves Wakefield of Whitman, Massachusetts decided to add a little bit of cut-up chocolate chunks to her cookies which was a great success. Later producers started selling the chocolate in chip or morsel form, so bakers wouldn't have to chop it up first when making cookies.
