Last week, we had the opportunity to attend the grand opening of South Dakota State University's new Cottonwood Field Station near Philip, South Dakota.

Can gas exchange data identify more efficient dairy cows? New research presented at EAAP suggests it can.

Researchers from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) used GreenFeed to calculate residual heat production (RHP) in 44 Nordic Red dairy cows. RHP is calculated much like residual feed intake: observed heat production minus predicted.

They compared the 16 most efficient cows with the 16 least efficient, on both a 55:45 and a 70:30 forage-to-concentrate diet.

What they found:
- Dry matter intake did not differ significantly (21.6 vs. 20.4 kg/d)
- Efficient cows produced more milk (31.9 vs. 24.8 kg/d) and more energy-corrected milk (36.6 vs. 31.3 kg/d)
- Efficient cows had lower methane intensity (10.3 vs. 13.6 g CH4/kg ECM) and lower methane yield (17.4 vs. 20.7 g CH4/kg DMI)
- The results were consistent across both diets

These findings add to the evidence that gas exchange measurements can serve as a practical indicator of feed efficiency, with benefits for both productivity and emissions.

How can you expect a sniffer to give consistent results when the variables needed to produce an emissions rate are missing?

A sniffer reading depends on the sensor, where it sits, the airflow around it, and the conditions that day. All of that changes from one barn or pasture to the next. So two readings can look comparable and still not mean the same thing ā€” which makes pooling data across herds, regions, or studies shaky.

Flux measurement is built the opposite way. Every GreenFeed unit is manufactured and calibrated to the same standard, so a number from a dairy in Germany means the same thing as one from a feedlot in Texas ā€” same measurement, same way, every time.

That consistency is what makes the data usable ā€” comparable across herds, trials, and studies, because the method behind it is standardized.
