"Why I joined and participated in BNI

When I started my small business ownership, I quickly learned how important building your business by building relationship really was.

There are several approaches to gaining new clients, but strong relationships with a client beyond a transactional relationship seem to be the most rewarding.

I first tried Chamber of commerce networks, and an independently organized one. I made lasting relationships through these efforts, and that’s when I knew networking was so important. The trouble I had with these groups, is they eventually became just a group of friends getting together for lunch, and lost the determined focus of helping each other grow their network and circle of influence.

I then joined a newly founded BNI group and liked that it was structured and stayed focused on the reason for the meetings. But the group was small, and kept contracting and growing but never got past 8-10 members. I decided to end my membership with it. A year or so later I joined Network Connections and have really enjoyed it. Great professionals, nice people who I would refer without reservation.

As I end my career of owing and marketing a small business I have confirmed my initial observation. You can grow a business with gorilla marketing, broadcast advertising, and 50 other ways to “get the word out”….even highly effective signage! Do this and your business may very well grow like a w**d! But, build strong relationship with people in the business community and your clients, and your business will grow. It will be slower, but instead of a w**d that can die as fast as it grows, it will be like an oak tree! "
