Working on a stunning American elm for St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Once known as the most popular tree in the United States, the vast majority of mature American elm were killed off by a non-native fungal pathogen by 1980. This is likely the largest American elm in Rawlins and one of the nicest trees in town.

St. Thomas Episcopal Church is one of the oldest churches in Wyoming, beginning in 1868.

The Washington Elm was a historic American elm in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Legend holds that General George Washington took command of the Continental Army beneath this tree in 1775. A seedling from the Washington elm was gifted to Wyoming in 1933 and is still thriving today on the State Capitol grounds in Cheyenne.

Something that seems to be unique to the tree industry; just about anyone with a chainsaw & a lift believes they can do tree work. No one buys wire st*****rs & a multimeter & calls themselves an electrician. Coincidentally, the tree care industry also has a fatality rate 15x the national all-industry average.

This isn’t carpentry, you can’t cut a new board if you make the wrong cut. Restoration pruning, if even possible, is a years long process & butchered trees never regain their original form.

Girdling Roots

A stem girdling root circles or partially circles the trunk of a tree at or just below the surface. As they grow larger, they choke off the flow of water & nutrients between roots and branches & prevent food produced in the leaves from reaching the roots. They can also compress and weaken the stem of the tree.

Stem girdling roots are common in container grown trees. They can also be a symptom of planting too deeply. Smaller girdling roots can be cut away after carefully excavating the root collar.. Once they’ve reached the size pictured below, they are generally too large to remove.

Mulching is one of the simplest ways to improve tree health in the long-term. Mulch retains moisture, moderates soil temperatures, prevents damage from mowing equipment & slowly releases nutrients and improves soil as it breaks down over time.

The first image is an excavation of an eight year old mulch bed. The original wood chips have decomposed and become dark, nutrient rich soil. Nutrient availability is one of the primary limiting factors to tree size & health.

Photo two is an excellent example of mulching out to the drip line. Another benefit of large mulch rings is less turf to maintain. This saves not only time but also money.

W**d fabric placed under mulch restricts water & air movement & creates a barrier between decomposing material and roots below. Rock mulch does not decompose & absorbs heat, leading to hard, lifeless soil over time.
