What are the PCR, Antigen and Antibody Test telling you?
We have been asked this question allot lately. Here is a simple breakdown to show what each of these tests tell us. Each tests should detect the virus depending on which phase it is in.
- PCR (Deep Nasal Swab) It is a lab based test to detect an active virus as soon as symptoms arise. This is the most reliable test to confirm an active infection.
- Antigen (Shallow Nasal or Saliva) It is a rapid test that detects an active infection 2-5 days after onset of symptoms or possible exposure. This is also a reliable test that is low cost with a quick turn around. This test should be followed up with a PCR to confirm the results.
- Antibody Test (Finger Stick) It is a rapid test to detect antibodies in your blood. IgM signifies that your body beginning to produce the first antibodies to fight the virus. IgG signifies that your body has produced the antibodies to help fight against a more severe infection. Antibody tests are also used to test an individual who has received the vaccine to confirm that their body is still producing antibodies to fight any future infection.
