🔐 MEDALLION SIGNATURE GUARANTEE vs. NOTARY STAMP — THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!
Have you ever been told, “I need a Medallion Stamp”?
If you're thinking, No problem, I'll call a notary! STOP! ✋
A Medallion Signature Guarantee is different from a traditional notarization.
What is a Medallion Signature Guarantee?
A Medallion Signature Guarantee is a special type of signature authentication primarily used when transferring or selling securities, such as stocks, bonds, or certain investment assets.
The financial institution providing the guarantee verifies the signer’s identity and authority to complete the transaction and assumes financial responsibility if the signature is forged or unauthorized.
Who can provide it?
Medallion Signature Guarantees are generally provided by participating:
✔️ Banks
✔️ Credit unions
✔️ Brokerage firms
✔️ Other qualifying financial institutions
The institution must participate in a recognized Medallion Signature Guarantee Program, such as STAMP, SEMP, or MSP.
HERE'S THE IMPORTANT PART FOR NOTARY CLIENTS:
A Notary Public cannot simply place a Medallion Stamp on your document.
A notarization verifies the identity of the signer and completes a notarial act according to applicable law.
A Medallion Signature Guarantee, on the other hand, involves a financial institution guaranteeing the signature and accepting liability for certain losses related to an unauthorized or forged signature.
When might you encounter a Medallion requirement?
You may be asked for one when dealing with:
• Stock or securities transfers
• Investment accounts
• Certain ownership changes
• Transfer of securities after an estate or inheritance
• Some retirement or brokerage transactions
Your financial institution or the company handling the transfer should tell you whether a Medallion Signature Guarantee is required.
ABT Notary Tip:
If someone tells you, “I need this notarized,” but the paperwork specifically says Medallion Signature Guarantee, don't assume a notary can perform the service.
Instead, contact the financial institution, brokerage firm, or transfer agent handling the transaction and ask where you can obtain the required guarantee.
At ABT Notary LLC, we believe that knowing what service you actually need can save you time, money, and a frustrating trip!
