So there's a first for everything. This here has been a nightmare for this customer. It's about 4 yrs old with only 5 hrs on it. Won't pull start on gas. Will on propane. He has to start it on propane then switch to gasoline while it's running. So my first diagnosis was the ignition coil as the spark was very weak. As even on starting fluid it wouldn't start without a good amount of fluid and pulling. Adjusted the valves. Still no start. Replaced that it starts on fluid, starts to shut down then runs on gasoline. Mind you the 12v battery is bad (Customer thinks it's that but I have never had a portable generator not run right over a 12v battery). But will fire right up on propane. Called westinghouse. They said to order a new carburetor but they are on backorder (go figure) it finally shows up like a month later. I just installed it and it still does the same thing. However I don't have to use as much starting fluid and pull my tail off to get it to start on gasoline. One pull it fires hesitates then continues to run. I call westinghouse again. After a couple minutes. The guy asks me about the 12v battery. I tell him it's bad. The guy says oh. That has to be a good 12v battery in there to operate the 12v side so the fuel solenoid on the carburetor opens to allow the fuel to run through the carburetor. So i grab my trusty old school charger and hook it up to the 12v battery. Pull it and it fires right up. I have never and I mean never had a portable generator not start on gasoline over a 12 volt battery being bad. Never. This is definitely a first and I think it's the stupidest thing because the poor customer now has to either pull the battery out of the thing every time he is done using it so he can put a battery tender on it or he has to run a cord out of his house through his backyard and to his shed to keep the generator charged when it's not used so the 12 volt battery doesn't go bad. So I'm getting the customer a new 12 volt battery and a battery tender. It may have given me a run for my money but i will always figure it out somehow, someway. 610-587-2133
