Lassen Canyon Nursery, Inc.

Lassen Canyon Nursery, Inc. Growers of Quality Strawberry Plants Lassen Canyon Nursery was established in the 1950’s by Clarence Popejoy. Kenny bought the nursery from Bob’s family. Ken Jr.

In 1951, after graduating from high school, Kenny Elwood Sr. took a job with Clarence learning the strawberry business. He worked his way up the ranks and became field superintendent. During this time Robert (Bob) Parker joined the Lassen Canyon team and worked on the administrative side while Kenny handled the field responsibilities. When Clarence got ready to retire in the 1970’s he sold the com

pany to Kenny and Bob. The two ran the company together until Bob’s death in 1980. In 1988, Kenny Elwood Jr. joined the Lassen Canyon ranks. He learned the business the old-fashioned way…from the bottom up. has done most of the jobs at Lassen Canyon from changing pipe to picking blooms, to trouble shooting problems in grower fields. Ken Jr.’s sister Liz joined Lassen Canyon Nursery in 1995. Liz had it a little easier than her brother. Dad didn’t make her work in the field since she quit her law practice in order to return home and work for him. In 1998 Liz and Ken Jr. took over the general management of Lassen Canyon Nursery from their father. Although Ken Sr. remained integrally involved in the goings on at Lassen Canyon Nursery, Liz handled the administrative portion of the nursery and Ken Jr. was responsible for the field duties. Ken Sr. was then free to pursue his real love: cattle ranching including a large hay operation. The trio operated this way until Ken Sr.’s death in 2005. In 2022 Kenny finalized the purchase of Liz’s share of the company and has assumed full ownership. Kenny has big plans for the future of Lassen Canyon Nursery. He is determined to provide a high standard of quality strawberry plants. Kenny shares the same appreciation for the cattle and hay operation as his father. The third generation of Elwood’s are starting to come up through the ranks in the same “old-fashioned” way the previous generations did. Kenny believes that Lassen Canyon Nursery’s greatest asset is its employees. There is nothing short of a small army of extremely talented and devoted people to make up Lassen Canyon Nursery. We grow over 1200 acres of strawberry plants in California, Mexico and China and harvest over 850 acres of hay. Thank you for your interest in our company.

💜 THANK YOU, LASSEN CANYON NURSERIES 💜

This week, we skated our very last practice inside a strawberry warehouse.

Yep, you read that right. Since March, Shasta Roller Derby has been calling an empty warehouse at Lassen Canyon Nursery, Inc. our home. The floor wasn’t fancy. It wasn’t built for skating. But it was ours. And it saved us.

Here’s the truth: roller derby isn’t like other sports. There’s no big league funding, no cushy budgets. Our league is run entirely by skaters, for skaters. We volunteer our time, our skills, and our energy — and then we still pay monthly dues just to keep the lights on. The biggest cost we face? Practice space. And the biggest reason roller derby teams dissolve? A lack of one.

When Big League Dreams closed last summer, we lost that space. Suddenly, we were displaced. We practiced wherever we could — even on the pickleball courts at Enterprise Park in the blazing 100° Redding summer heat. We skated on cracked concrete that chewed up our wheels and toe stops, we made accidental enemies of the pickleball crowd, and deep down, we worried: Would Shasta Roller Derby even survive?

We did what any desperate team would do: we scrambled. We scoured the internet for warehouses for lease. We cold-called the owners of vacant buildings, begging for a chance. We prayed to the derby gods that something — anything — would work out. And for a while, it really felt like we were running out of options.

That’s when Lassen Canyon Nurseries/Elwood Ranch stepped in. They handed us the keys to their unused strawberry warehouse and said, “Go skate.”

That act of generosity gave us more than just four walls and a floor. It gave us hope. It gave us time. It gave us the chance to keep training, to keep playing, to keep existing as a league. It meant we could save the money we desperately needed to afford practices at the Redding Sports Park this winter — without running out of money, without dissolving, without losing this team we’ve built with our sweat and love.

Without Lassen Canyon, we might not be here today. Period.

So as we rolled out of our last warehouse practice this week, we did it with full hearts and endless gratitude. Thank you, Lassen Canyon Nurseries, for keeping Shasta Roller Derby alive. You didn’t just give us a space — you gave us a future.

From the bottom of our hearts: thank you. 💜

Now… onto Bout Weekend! See you at the track 🥳

Congratulations to Kenny Elwood for winning the 2025 Distinguished Service Award at the Annual Shasta Farm Bureau Dinner. I have only known Kenny for less than two years but one thing that has always stood out to me since day one is his generosity to everyone around him and the passion for his community and making it a better place. Well deserved Kenny! Lassen Canyon Nursery, Inc. Elwood Ranch
