Hi all! Just wanted to post an update that I'm not taking clients as a birth or postpartum doula because I am currently 35 weeks pregnant with my 3rd! I snapped this photo before leaving to my postpartum doula client's house yesterday- here's what yesterday's postpartum basket included!
1. Tomato and pumpkin soup with herb chicken sausage
2. Gentle herbs for vaginal steaming
3. A Shepherd's Pie recipe so I could make one for their freezer
4. My kombucha (what can I say, I love them!)

Warming food, postpartum care, freezer meals. This is what being a postpartum doula is all about!

Usually when I tell people I'm a postpartum doula, I get met with a blank stare and a question. "What do you DO?"

Here's how I explain it to prospective clients - imagine your ideal postpartum. Your dream fourth trimester. What does it include? Home cooked food delivered to you on the couch? You in bed for 40 days getting to know your new baby? Daily herbal baths and some alone time each day? I can be part of that ideal postpartum!

Whatever you're needing and wanting is what I'm there for. Today I'm bringing these amazing Paleo Carrot Cake Muffins and some Cozy Autumn Wild Rice Soup to my client. Since this is our first visit after her birth, I'll heat her up some healing bone broth and we'll talk about how the birth went, how the transition is going, and what her immediate needs are.

I want to hear from you! What would your ideal postpartum look like?

It just warms my soul when women help women! Michelle McCoy Atencio (pictured right) has been teaching me some traditional postpartum practices, and Emily Brown (left) let me practice the Closing the Bones ceremony on her the other day. Have you ever heard of a Closing the Bones ceremony? It's a traditional postpartum ceremony that typically happens on day 40 after having baby, but it can really happen anytime postpartum (even 50 years postpartum!). It includes an herbal bath, warming tea, light body work, belly and foot massage, and at the end you're laying all swaddled up in rebozos like the picture below. I say a blessing over you and do some work with a tuning fork, then you're released, given some more tea, and baby is brought to you.

It's incredibly relaxing to the nervous system, stimulates the vegus nerve, increases circulation, helps with healing, and brings closure. You know how it feels after you have a baby-like your organs are trying to figure out how to get back to normal and there's a big empty space where the baby was? This totally helps with that.

If you're a postpartum doula client, this ceremony is part of what I do for you. If you want it as a standalone service, that is an option, too! (It's a great gift for a mama-to-be.)
