On Sunday at approximately 11:00 P.M. RTPD officers responded to Telegraph/5 Mile on a report of a crash involving a vehicle that was driving the wrong way.
Preliminary information is that a 40-year-old male was driving the wrong way on Telegraph in a burgundy Durango. The vehicle was driving NB in the SB lanes. The burgundy Durango struck two vehicles just north of 5 mile on Telegraph. The burgundy Durango continued at a high rate of speed and struck another vehicle head on at the stop light north of 5 Mile at the turnaround. The head on collision’s impact caused other vehicles stopped at the stoplight to be struck also. There were a total of 8 vehicles involved in this crash. The driver of the burgundy Durango was transported to Corewell Farmington Hills Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. All other individuals that were involved in the crash had minor or no injuries.
This is an active and ongoing investigation. High rate of speed as well as driving the wrong way were factors in the crash.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Officer Jacob Vance at [email protected] or 313-387-2561 in the Redford Township Police Traffic Bureau.
Thank you to the fire departments from Dearborn Heights, Livonia, and Southfield for their assistance.
