About this event
WE ARE NOW THE #2 OFFICIAL DNC EVENT IN THE NATION!

THANK YOU!

This is your chance to participate in a live podcast taping! Bring your questions, we can't wait to see you.

THIS WEEK'S GUEST: RICHARD BENACK

We are in the midst of unprecedented hybrid-warfare tactics being waged against us by our adversaries abroad and domestically.

In no space is this more clear than with the cognitive warfare waged in social media. This is, in effect, the use of very sophisticated Psychological Operations (PsyOps) developed usually by various militaries, and used to target specific individuals all the way through to the general public.

Richard Benack has a Masters of Science (MS), Criminal Justice with an Emphasis in Cybercrime and Intelligence Analysis, and is a 20 year Air Force Intelligence and Counterintelligence Officer Veteran, with even more years working in the private security sphere.

Richard will guide us through the methods of these attacks, their breadth, and what we can do to guard ourselves against them. We will also explore the spheres of domestic terrorism at the shared root of cause, here, and those from foreign lands.

We hope you can join us.

Weekly Town Hall Podcast is a political discussion/roundtable with guests who are experts and have personal experiences to shine light on our most critical issues. Our podcast is your podcast, serving as a beacon and community space, curating content that informs and inspires any listener.

Our host will lead with an interview of our guest, and then open questions up to the participating audience.

I have had my 2nd article on Behavior Profiling as a threat assessment tool published. (You will need to create an account if you don't already have one)

Using Behavior Profiling to Identify Insider Threats – Part 2

"Detecting Insider threats requires understanding the differences between the various types of malicious behaviors including the motive, methodology, attack techniques and especially the victim profiles.

The first step in detecting malicious user behavior is identifying the organization’s “Victimology Profile”. This is done by having the organization look at their own vulnerabilities and risks to identify the likelihood of various types of criminal or malicious activity. What are the organization’s risks from saboteurs, data thieves, fraudsters, industrial espionage, malicious activists, or other threats? What would each of these attacks look like and how would an attacker behave during them? This victimology profile should drive the organization’s threat detection and monitoring program. For example, many organizations just block access to online gambling websites. But if the CFO has a pattern of trying to access these sites, then the organization may be at high risk for financial fraud or embezzlement.

Once an organization understands its victimology profile, it can focus on identifying a limited set of user actions to monitor and detect through technology and personal observation. The basic approach is to analyze “normal” user behavior to develop a normal user profile and then alert if actions outside of that “normal” profile are noticed. "

INTRODUCTION In the previous article, we talked about the importance of identifying risky and threatening behavior from people working in an organization. But that is only half the story. The most important part of keeping an organization safe from insiders is detecting and countering threatening be...

Here is part 1 an article I wrote on "Using Behavior Profiling to Identify Insider Threats". (You need to log in but its free)

"Organizations often spend significant time, effort and resources protecting their data and systems from external threats such as hackers, foreign spies, hacktivists, and cybercriminals. Internal threats, often called “insider threats”, are often ignored because they are much more challenging for an organization to address.

One valuable tool for managing risk around insider threats is “Behavior Profiling”. Behavior Profiling is about identifying potential behavior patterns, motivations, emotional states, and demographic variables of an insider who could engage in malicious activity against the organization. The goals are to accurately profile, predict and detect internal threats who may be seeking to damage the organization.

Implementing behavior profiling into an organizations threat assessment program requires both human and technological commitment. An organization’s own people are on the frontline for detecting insider threats by observing concerning behaviors, or significant changes in a coworker and other related stressors. Insider threat detection should also include using technologies such as SIEMs, monitoring tools, access control systems and machine learning to identify risky or unusual behavior."

Here is my latest article on Cybersecurity (you will need do a FREE Registration to see the whole article)

Social cybersecurity is an emerging field that focuses on understanding the impact of human behavior on information security, and the social, cultural, and political impact of cyber technology and cyberthreats. Unlike traditional cybersecurity, which is focused on the risk of hacking machines, social cybersecurity is concerned with the threat of hacking people. For example, one of the biggest social cybersecurity threats is ‘cognitive hacking’. Cognitive hacking is a type of cyber-attack that targets individuals and groups beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors by exploiting their psychological vulnerabilities, cognitive biases, and prejudices. Its goal is to influence the target’s perception of reality so they can be more easily manipulated. As a result, protecting people and organizations from cognitive hacks must become a primary goal of cybersecurity along with protecting information systems. This requires a new type of an information security professional who understands risks and threats to both technology and people. As a result, we need to recognize the increasing importance that social cybersecurity will play in keeping people, organizations, and even nations safer.

When we traditionally discuss the term “cybersecurity”, we think in terms of protecting computer systems and the data that resides in them. We rarely think of protecting the people who manage this technology and its associated data. Coming from the intelligence world, it was taught to assume tha...

Welcome to the HiPerformance Security blog. This week we will talk about ways of staying safe online during the holiday season.
During this pandemic, people will be shopping more online and spending more time there then in the past. They will also be using their mobile devices extensively. Its even more important now that people practice online safety.

Below are simple ways to better protect yourself and avoid becoming a victim of online fraud and identity theft:
1. Avoid free Wi-Fi networks:
2. Lock down your accounts
3. Only do business with reputable vendors
4. Use a credit card instead of debit cards
5. When ordering online, check out as a guest to avoid saving payment information online
6. Check your credit card statements
7. Make sure your information is being encrypted
8. Be careful of unknown emails
9. Guard your mobile device

"To protect voters and the election process in a fraught year, at least three Washington counties will have some sort of security presence at ballot drop boxes or elections offices at points during the voting period, officials said Wednesday.

In King County, plainclothes security officers will keep an eye on drop boxes, county officials said. Other measures are being taken in Snohomish and Thurston counties.

Meanwhile, experts with Washington National Guard will be working Election Day evening, monitoring for any cybersecurity threats, according to Secretary of State Kim Wyman."

King County is expecting record voter turnout, Elections Director Julie Wise said as her department sends out some 1.4 million ballots on Wednesday. She asked for voters to return their ballots early to help speed counting.

Here are some tools to help people fight the constant Propaganda & Disinformation we are seeing daily.

Tools That Fight Disinformation Online

RAND researchers developed a searchable online database that provides information about tools that fight online disinformation, particularly on social media.

"Everyone has the opportunity to fight Russian efforts to "drive U.S. citizens to extremes before the November election. Tech firms have a responsibility to root out Russian social media content and ensure their users are who they claim to be. Political, religious, and civic leaders could bring people together and help build consensus on divisive issues—like race relations, immigration, and economic inequality—that Russia may try to exploit.
Most importantly, users could be more careful about what information they share online. Don't forward content from unknown sources. Don't post content that you have not fact-checked. Be aware that even a humorous meme may have an underlying dark goal—to make you think less of another group.
Americans are less likely to have their emotions manipulated if they are aware that manipulation is the goal. Behind the veil of extreme positions are groups of people who may well have much in common. It's important to recognize that disinformation efforts targeted at emotional beliefs could further decay the national discourse."

The goal of Russian interference is to trigger emotional reactions and drive people to ideological extremes, making it nearly impossible to build a consensus. But Americans are less likely to have their emotions manipulated if they are aware that manipulation is the goal.
