🚒 SHOW UP FOR AB 1383 🚒

Firefighters across California are heading to Sacramento — and Local 2400 needs to be there too.

AB 1383 would lower the public safety retirement age from 57 to 55 and give us the ability to bargain for stronger retirement security. After years of PEPRA cuts, this bill puts real fairness back on the table — especially with cancer now the leading cause of line-of-duty death in our profession.

25 years ago today, 343 members of the FDNY answered a call they would never return from. They ran toward the towers as everyone else ran away — and gave everything they had.

But 343 is not the final number. In the decades since, hundreds more firefighters, police officers, members of the military and other first responders have died from cancers and respiratory illnesses tied to their time at Ground Zero. Their sacrifice didn’t end on September 11, 2001 — it continued in hospital rooms, in oncology wards, in the years they should have had with their families.

And behind every name is a family who carried the weight long after the cameras left — spouses who became widows and widowers overnight, children who grew up holding onto a badge instead of a father or mother, parents who buried their sons and daughters. Their grief, and their strength, are part of this story too. We remember them as much as we remember the fallen.

Today, San Mateo County Firefighters Local 2400 stands with fire departments across the country to remember them all. We carry their names, their service, and their sacrifice with us every shift.

On August 26, Steve fell while assisting a friend with a construction project. The fall caused severe misalignment and fractures in his upper spine, requiring emergency surgery.

Steve is currently recovering in the ICU and faces a long road of rehabilitation. His family remains hopeful that, with time and rehabilitation, he will regain the ability to walk and return to a high quality of life.

As Steve begins this long recovery, his wife, Christy, will need significant in-home assistance to help care for him and manage the demands of his recovery. The cost of this care has been quoted at approximately $12,000–$15,000 per month, creating a substantial financial burden for the family on top of the many other unexpected expenses they are facing.

Funds raised through this GoFundMe will help cover expenses not covered by insurance, including in-home assistance for Christy and Steve, modifications to their home, and equipment and tools to assist with Steve’s mobility and independence.

Last week San Mateo County Firefighters L2400 participated in a rally with San Mateo County Central Labor Council in solidarity to support for VLF reimbursement for San Mateo County. Thank you to all those that support keeping Public Safety the priority.

Local 2400 San Mateo County Firefighters raised over $10k for the Local 2400 San Mateo County Firefighters Foundation. This foundation goes towards firefighters and their families in need during their times of need. Thank you to all that participated and donated!!
