The Sunshine Circle Club marked its upcoming 64th anniversary and its fourth annual Kwanzaa Recognition Awards Celebration Dec. 27, at First State Community Action Agency in Georgetown. The program recognized community members who embodied the seven principles of Kwanzaa: Umoja – unity; Kujichagulia – self-determination; Ujima – collective work and responsibility; Ujamaa – cooperative economics; Nia – purpose; Kuumba – creativity; and Imani – faith.

This year’s awardees, Men of Kwanzaa, were Cliffvon Howell – Umoja; Melvin Mitchell – Kujichagulia; Calvin Jackson – Ujima; Chester Hope – Ujamaa; Donald G. Thomas Sr. – Nia; Dan Cook – Kuumba; and Bishop Alfred Cannon – Imani

Today is the Delaware Statewide Freedom School Harambee Celebration at Delaware State University where over 500 young scholars will convene in recognition of the commitment they have made all summer to enhance their reading capability while also learning the importance of becoming leaders for the betterment of their community.

I'm a political scientist by education. This past week I had the opportunity to serve as an expert witness on voting rights policy before the Delaware House of Representatives Administrative Committee. I testified regarding HB-189, a bill seeking to eliminate corporations and other artificial entities from voting in municipal elections.
