Water hardness refers to the concentration of dissolved minerals, mainly calcium and magnesium, in your water supply. While these minerals aren't harmful to your health, hard water can cause scale buildup in pipes and appliances, reduce the efficiency and lifespan of water heaters and dishwashers, make soaps and detergents less effective, and contribute to dry skin and dull hair. To treat hard water, cities and homeowners often use water softeners, which remove these minerals through a process called ion exchange by replacing them with sodium or potassium ions.
