If you're an EMDR therapist who has ever found yourself drawn to IFS β€” you're not alone. And there's good clinical reason for it.

EMDR gives us a powerful, structured reprocessing protocol. But there are clients where the standard approach hits a wall: processing stalls, protective parts dig in, or the client is too defended to access the trauma material directly. That's often exactly where IFS concepts start to feel useful.

The good news? These two frameworks are genuinely compatible β€” not just as a vibe, but conceptually. The exile in IFS and the dysfunctionally stored memory in AIP are describing the same thing from different angles. Both are isolated from healthy integration. Both generate symptoms as a result.

We wrote a full clinical guide on how to integrate IFS into your EMDR practice, covering:

β†’ How IFS concepts apply across each of the 8 EMDR phases
β†’ Working with protective parts when processing blocks β€” without pushing through
β†’ Why this integration is especially valuable for complex trauma and highly defended clients
β†’ What the competency considerations actually look like (including what this integration is NOT)
β†’ Further reading and case study resources

Whether you're just curious about integration or actively exploring how to bring IFS concepts into your sessions, this guide will give you a solid clinical foundation to work from.

Can we talk about the most common EMDR certification misconception we see? πŸ‘‡

So many therapists finish EMDR Basic Training and assume the consultation hours they completed during training count toward certification.

They don't.

Basic training consultation counts toward finishing your training. The 20 hours you need for EMDRIA certification? Those are completely separate β€” and they start after your training is done.

Which means if you haven't started post-training consultation yet, your certification hours are still at zero. No judgment β€” this trips up a lot of people!

The good news: once you know what's actually required, the path to certification is pretty straightforward. Here's the quick version:

β†’ 20 consultation hours with an EMDRIA-Approved Consultantβ„’ (post-training)
β†’ 50 EMDR sessions with at least 25 individual clients
β†’ Active license + current EMDRIA membership
β†’ A completed application with consultant sign-off

We wrote a full guide that breaks all of this down β€” including how to combine individual and group consultation hours, what actually qualifies, and how to track everything so you're not scrambling when it's time to apply.

Read it here β†’ https://scalingupemdr.com/how-many-emdr-consultation-hours-do-you-actually-need-for-certification/

What if you could do deeper trauma work, see fewer clients per week, and actually increase your income?

That's what EMDR therapy intensives can look like when they're done well.

Instead of the usual 50-minute weekly format, intensives are extended treatment blocks β€” half-day, full-day, or even multi-day β€” where clients get concentrated EMDR processing in a compressed timeframe. And therapists get something too: fewer context-switching transitions, more clinically complete sessions, and private-pay pricing that actually reflects your expertise.

We wrote a full guide on how to add EMDR intensives to your practice, including:

β†’ Who makes a good candidate (and who doesn't)
β†’ How to structure half-day, full-day, and multi-day formats
β†’ What a solid screening and prep process looks like
β†’ How to think about pricing β€” including why underpricing is a mistake
β†’ The most common pitfalls therapists run into when launching intensives

Whether you're just exploring this model or ready to add it to your practice, this guide will give you a solid starting point.

Read it here β†’ https://scalingupemdr.com/how-to-add-emdr-intensives-to-your-practice

Have you offered EMDR intensives before? Drop a comment β€” we'd love to hear what's worked for you! πŸ’™

EMDR Basic Training (Pacific Time Hybrid Cohorts) β€” Starting June 2026

If you’ve been looking for an EMDRIA-approved training that gives you a clear path to learn the full model and apply it with clinical judgment and fidelity, our Pacific Time Hybrid cohorts are now enrolling. CEs are available, and you’ll be supported through both Part 1 + Part 2, with consultation built into the full training experience.

Why clinicians love the hybrid format

πŸ‘ Hybrid training is a strong fit if you want the best of both worlds:

πŸ‘ In-person connection for Part 1 to build confidence, practice skills, and learn in a supportive room with your cohort

πŸ‘ Virtual Part 2 so you can keep learning without extra travel, while still staying engaged and supported

πŸ‘ It matches how many therapists work todayβ€”seeing some clients in-person and others virtuallyβ€”so your learning environment reflects your day-to-day rhythm

πŸ‘ More ease on your schedule (and less logistics) without losing the structure and accountability of live training

πŸ‘ Continuity with your cohort as you move from foundations into more complex applications

Most EMDR trainings focus on protocols. Of course the protocols matter.

But what many clinicians discover after Basic Training is that learning the protocol is only the beginning. The real question becomes: How does EMDR actually fit into my work, my clients, and my practice over time?

At Scaling Up, we approach EMDR Basic Training a little differently.

We don’t just teach EMDR protocols.
We teach clinicians how to architect their EMDR practice.

Our EMDR Basic Training helps clinicians develop a neurobiological and social-emotional understanding of how stress and trauma shape human experience and therapeutic change.

Rather than functioning as a single modality, EMDR becomes a portal and a platformβ€”opening new ways of conceptualizing clients, selecting interventions, and integrating EMDR with other therapeutic approaches across diverse clinical presentations.

Alongside the curriculum itself, participants receive:

βœ…a highly structured and supportive training environment

βœ… an experienced team of trainers and facilitators

βœ… a thoughtfully designed set of clinical handouts created for clarity and usability

βœ… access to our custom online learning platform, the Scaling Up Hub

βœ… and a nine-month follow-up email series that continues supporting clinicians as their EMDR practice unfolds

We’ve designed this entire ecosystem with one goal in mind:
to support clinicians in developing EMDR practices that are effective, ethical, and sustainable.

Because when clinicians are supported well, the impact extends far beyond the training room.

It reaches their clients, their communities, and ultimately contributes to our shared mission of alleviating human suffering at scale.

If this sounds like the type of experience you'd like to have for your EMDR training, join us at our upcoming Riverside, CA Hybrid training!

Calling all EMDR-trained therapists! πŸ‘‹

We know the feeling β€” you finish Basic Training feeling energized and ready, and then you sit down with your first client and realize the gap between the training room and the session room is... real.

You're not alone in that. And you don't have to figure it out without support.

The EMDR Essentials Pack was built to be the practical bridge you've been looking for. It's a full collection of ready-to-use scripts and protocols β€” calm place, container, RDI, Phase 3–7 processing, future templates, interweaves, cognitions lists, and more β€” all formatted so you can actually use them in session, not just read them as a textbook.

Everything is available in English AND Spanish, so clinicians working with bilingual populations are covered too.

It's not a shortcut to EMDR competency (nothing replaces good training and consultation!), but it is the practical toolkit that makes those early sessions feel a whole lot less like you're reinventing the wheel every time.

04/29/2026

A common misconception is that EMDR is only for PTSD or single-incident trauma. In real-world practice, many clinicians use EMDR as a transdiagnostic modality - a way to work with the experiences and stuck patterns that show up across diagnoses.

That matters, because clients don’t arrive in neat categories. You may be seeing anxiety, panic, depression, grief, attachment wounds, chronic stress, medical trauma, performance blocks, addiction, eating disorders, self-harm, minority stress, autistic burnout or persistent negative self-beliefs - sometimes layered together. EMDR gives you a structured approach to target the experiences, triggers, and body-based activation that keep these patterns in place.

In Scaling Up’s EMDRIA-approved EMDR Basic Training, you’ll learn the full EMDR model and how to apply it with clinical judgment and fidelityβ€”so you will have a reliable launchpad for incorporating EMDR into your work with a wider range of clients.
