Happy Manufacturing Day!

Manufacturing has changed considerably due to advancements in technology, like automation and digital systems, and workplaces have become safer and more comfortable. These changes have enabled employees to learn new skills and enrich their job opportunities. Manufacturing careers offer the use of innovation and technology, competitive compensation, pride in creation and much more!

The University of Nevada, Reno has been awarded a highly competitive National Science Foundation (NSF) Engines Development Award, “Advancing the circular economy for lithium batteries.” The Award will support an initial 24-month period aimed to transform the lithium battery workforce and economic development in Nevada.

“Lithium is a critical element that powers our society today and is necessary for our clean energy future,” Co-Project Director and technical lead Dev Chidambaram, director of the Nevada Institute for Sustainability and a Nevada Regents’ Researcher in the College of Engineering, University of Nevada, Reno, said. “There is significant need not only to identify domestic sources of critical materials and to develop domestic processing capabilities, but also to advance recycling methods to reuse critical materials already in use.”

The awardees span a broad range of states and regions, reaching geographic areas that have not fully benefited from the technology boom of the past decades. These NSF Engines Development Awards will help organizations create connections and develop their local innovation ecosystems within two years to prepare strong proposals for becoming future NSF Engines, which will each have the opportunity to receive up to $160 million. https://bit.ly/3Bg2phY
