Hartgen was at Historic Cherry Hill today conducting a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Survey! Check out Hartgen's Ben Heckman pictured below. GPR is a non-invasive reconnaissance method that helps identify archeological features with subsurface imagery.

Looks like grounds maintenance--but it's not! It's Ben from Hartgen Archaeological Associates using Ground Penetrating Radar. We’re getting ever closer to “breaking ground” on our next big capital project—which will include much-needed repairs and painting, reconstructing the historic porch, drainage improvements, ADA access, new parking, improved walkability, and a whole lot of curb appeal!

But first things first. Our site is known to contain significant archaeological resources—that’s no surprise, it’s been occupied by the Van Rensselaers since the 18th century, and past archaeology has unearthed artifacts from both European and Indigenous people before them. Our project will involve ground disturbance, and we want to be sure to mitigate any impact on the archaeological record. History is what we do, after all. Because our project is funded in part by New York State, we’re also required to go through SHPO review. That is, the State Historic Preservation Office has to sign off on our plans, and that includes making sure that archaeological resources are protected.

And that brings us to today’s shovel-free dig: Hartgen Archaeological Associates is onsite today utilizing Ground Penetrating Radar to visualize outlines of the archaeological record in the areas impacted by the project. The GPR, coupled with past archaeological reports, will enable them to make recommendations to avoid impacting sensitive areas—or will guide future digs that may be deemed necessary.

Also attending the NYSAA conference in Rochester last week, was the Camden High School students discussing and presenting their work at the Florence Settlement.

This settlement was created in the mid-to-late 1840s by Abolitionist Stephen Meyers and provided one of the first known opportunities in the U. S. for free African Americans to own land and farm at a large scale. Because of the value of the land they owned, they also obtained the right to vote in the state of New York. The land was granted by abolitionist leader Gerrit Smith.

For her immense contributions to the archeology of New York state and beyond, Louise Basa was presented with the New York Archeological Council's Founder's Award at the spring meeting in Rochester this past weekend. Matt Kirk and Nina Versaggi celebrate with Louis afterwards. Congrats to a dear friend of Hartgen and its staff!
