It is with profound sadness and immense gratitude that the members of IAFF Local I-66 Boeing mourn the passing of IAFF 7th District Vice President Emeritus James “Jim” Hill. Jim was more than a respected labor leader, he was a champion for Boeing firefighters whose vision, leadership, and dedication helped lay the foundation for our Local and the generations of members who have followed.
Born in Tacoma, Washington, in 1939, the same year the WSCFF was founded, Jim’s life would become inseparable from the labor movement, the IAFF, and the advancement of firefighters throughout the Pacific Northwest. After serving his country in the U.S. Coast Guard and working at Boeing, Jim joined the Tacoma Fire Department in 1963, beginning a career of service and leadership that would leave an enduring mark on countless lives.
In 1974, Jim was elected President of IAFF Local 31 Tacoma. Three years later, he became Vice President of the WSCFF, and in 1980 he was elected IAFF 7th District Vice President, a position he proudly held until his retirement in 1998. Throughout his career, Jim was a tireless advocate for working people, dedicating himself to strengthening unions and improving the lives of firefighters and their families.
Among Jim’s proudest accomplishments was negotiating the first collective bargaining agreement for IAFF Local I-66 Boeing following its affiliation with the IAFF on May 2, 1996. That achievement helped establish the foundation upon which Local I-66 continues to stand today. His leadership, guidance, and unwavering commitment to Boeing firefighters created opportunities and protections that continue to benefit members decades later.
The members of IAFF Local I-66 are forever grateful for Jim’s contributions to our Local. His work helped shape our identity, strengthen our voice, and secure our place within the IAFF. His legacy is woven into the history of our organization and will remain in the hearts of our members for generations to come.
Jim’s contributions to the WSCFF, the IAFF 7th District, and the labor movement as a whole cannot be overstated. Through decades of leadership, advocacy, and mentorship, he helped build a stronger union and a brighter future for firefighters throughout the region.
Jim was a true gentleman, respected for his integrity, admired for his leadership, and remembered for his kindness. While we mourn his passing, we celebrate a life dedicated to service and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
Generations of firefighters are better off because of Jim Hill’s dedication and sacrifice. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever honored.
