I was just 18 when the police came to our door.

It was early. Too early for any good news. Lila was laughing in the kitchen, and Tommy was dragging his blanket across the floor. For a few seconds, everything seemed normal.

Then I opened the door.

"Are you Rowan?" the officer asked.

There was something in his eyes that already told me the answer.

"There has been an accident. Your parents did not survive."

I cannot remember much after that moment. Just Lila asking what was wrong, Benji crying, and the twins holding on to each other.

A few days later, child services asked to speak with me.

"The children will be placed in foster care," the woman said.

"Together?" I asked.

She hesitated. "No."

Something inside me broke.

"No," I said. "They are staying with me."

She gave me that look. "You are eighteen. No money. No degree. This is not realistic."

"I do not care," I said. "They are not being separated."

Court was even harder.

"You have no experience, no support system. Why should I approve this?" the judge asked.

I looked at them. All seven. Full of fear.

"Because I am all they have," I said. "And they are all I have."

Then there was silence.

Then Lila burst out crying.

"I do not want to go somewhere else... I want him."

One by one, the others started crying too.

Even the judge looked away.

Two weeks later, I won.

Still, it did not get easier.

That morning, I was supposed to drop my 4-year-old daughter, Ava, off at daycare like I always did.

But I had an early meeting, so my husband, Mark, offered to take her instead.

A few hours later, her teacher called me in a panic and said Ava had suddenly become very sick, and an ambulance had taken her to the hospital.

By the time Mark and I got there, the doctor came out and told us Ava hadn't survived.

After that, everything felt like a blur.

Mark handled the funeral arrangements. I had no strength left.

I didn't know how to keep living at all.

My heart was shattered.

Only five days had passed since the funeral.

I sat at home, barely moving. I hadn't eaten in days.

Suddenly, my phone rang.

It was Miss Greenwood, Ava's daycare teacher.

She was the one who had called me the day Ava got sick.

Her voice was trembling:

"Mrs. Carter... I'm sorry to bother you. I don't even know how to explain this. I was reviewing the security footage and rewatching the day Ava got sick..."

My heart started pounding.

I asked:

"Yes... and what did you see?"

She cleared her throat and continued:

"I'm going to send the security footage to your phone as soon as I copy it. Please watch it. I feel uncomfortable saying this, but... your husband is lying to you."

My stomach twisted.

A few minutes later, I got a message from Miss Greenwood.

I opened the video.

My hands were shaking, but I pressed play.

When I saw what had happened on the day Ava died, the air left my lungs.
