ILS Celebrates International Women’s Day

Today, March 8, marks International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate women’s social, cultural, political, and economic achievements. International Women’s Day has been celebrated for well over a century. It was officially marked for the first time in 1911 and celebrated by over a million people in just four countries. Today, International Women’s Day is a globally recognized day to celebrate the lives of women in all nations, cultures and beliefs.

This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is “Embrace Equity”. Studies show we are still a long way from achieving gender equality. At ILS, we have a company culture of diversity, inclusion and equity. We wholeheartedly support this year's theme. ILS stands behind the goals of the International Women's Day movement to focus and celebrate the exceptional achievements of women, and in particular we celebrate the important role of women in aerospace.

As stated in the International Women's Day Website: "Equity isn't a nice-to-have, it's a must-have!"

January 19th - on this day in 2006, an ILS International Launch Services Atlas V 551 rocket lauched the New Horizons interplanetary space probe from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

The 478 kg New Horizons spacecraft was built by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and the Southwest Research Institute as part of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration's New Frontiers program. Its primary mission was a flyby of Pluto in 2015 - the first spacecraft to ever visit the dwarf planet.

On July 14th, 2015, New Horizons reached Pluto and flew at a distance of 12,500 km above its surface, moving on to study objects in the Kuiper belt and ultimately leaving our solar system due to its high speed of more than 84,000 km/h.
