PuroClean on Capitol Hill! 🏛️

This week, PuroClean leadership and Franchise Owners came together in Washington, D.C. for the 2026 International Franchise Association (IFA) Advocacy Summit, advocating for policies that protect franchise ownership, strengthen the franchise business model, and support continued growth.

A huge thank you to our PuroClean Franchise Owners who took the time to represent our network, share their experiences, and bring the voice of franchise ownership directly to Capitol Hill.

Following the IFA Advocacy Summit, PuroClean spent a day advocating on behalf of the restoration industry. A special thank you to Vince from the ria_restorers for helping coordinate our group and supporting PuroClean in this effort.

First, the ground is already saturated from months of winter snow and spring rain. Soil can't absorb any more water, so it has nowhere to go but toward your foundation. Second, May brings intense rainfall in short bursts rather than gentle showers. Your drainage system might handle normal rain fine but gets overwhelmed when 2 inches falls in an hour. Third, May's humidity and warm temperatures cause more condensation on basement walls and pipes, adding moisture from inside your home, too. 

All three factors combine to create perfect flooding conditions. This is why your sump pump works overtime in May, even though winter is over. Your pump isn't broken, it's just dealing with exceptional water volume! 

Make sure your drainage systems are ready for May's challenges. Test that pump, clean those gutters, and check your grading NOW!

Mold spores are everywhere in the environment, just waiting for the right conditions. When water damage happens, those spores land on wet surfaces and immediately start growing. By day three, you've got visible mold colonies spreading rapidly through walls, under flooring, and into HVAC systems.

If you have basement windows, you probably have window wells. And if you have window wells, you have a potential flooding entry point that most people completely ignore! 

Window wells are designed with drainage systems (gravel and drain pipes) that direct rainwater away from your foundation. But over time, these drains get clogged with dirt, leaves, and debris. When that happens, heavy rain fills the window well like a bathtub, and all that water eventually finds its way through your window into your basement. 

Here's what to do: clear debris from window wells regularly, check that gravel fill is clean and allows drainage, ensure drain pipes aren't clogged or crushed, install window well covers to keep most rain out, and verify that ground slopes away from window wells. 

Window well flooding is 100% preventable with basic maintenance. Don't let these small areas cause big basement problems!

With rainy days expected and potential for intense downpours, clogged gutters will overflow and dump thousands of gallons of water right next to your foundation. That water has to go somewhere, and "somewhere" is usually your basement! 

Here's your May gutter checklist: remove all debris, leaves, and dirt from gutters and downspouts, check for sagging sections that don't drain properly, ensure downspouts extend at least 6 feet away from your foundation (not 6 inches!), test water flow by running a hose in your gutters, and repair any leaks or separations immediately. 

One afternoon of gutter work can prevent thousands in basement flooding damage. The math is simple!

Check these spots at least quarterly by looking for water stains, musty odors, soft or discolored surfaces, and visible mold growth. If you find any warning signs, call professionals immediately for proper assessment. What you see is usually just the tip of the iceberg!
