Summer season is upon us. Are your fire extinguishers ready for service? We hope to never need them, but the reality is fires happen. When an extinguisher is needed they need to work!

-All extinguishers should be checked once per month to verify there is no damage and the pressure gauge is in the green. Nozzle and/or hose is clear of obstructions. Turn it upside down to loosen the settled powder.

-Once a year an inspection by a qualified service technician needs to be conducted.

-Every 6 years, a full service needs to be done which requires a discharge, internal inspection, valve rebuild and recharge, by a qualified service technician.

-Every 12 years a hydrostatic test needs to be done to test the cylinder for structural integrity. This also needs to be done by a qualified service technician.

If you need any of these services, please feel free to reach out to me.

Importance of regular service:
I recently pulled an extinguisher out of service that had not been serviced in 23 years. The gauge was in the green, the cylinder looked to be in good condition, label was legible. All seemed to be ok, until I pulled the pin to discharge the powder into the recovery system. I squeezed the handle, and it didn't move! I squeezed harder and finally after exerting significant force, the valve finally opened. This experience drove home the point that regular service is essential to keeping our extinguishers in ready condition. When seconds count, we want to be sure our equipment will work and do its job!
