Trego WI, millin’ up some red oak.
Fall really is the best time for milling. Nothing quite beats the crispy air, leaves falling, and the russel of the breeze through said leaves. Thanks to Don and Laurie for having me out. I’m looking forward to the spring where we get into the poplars and make those into some usable lumber!

Prepping about 100 gallons of walnuts for broadcast planting. If any take I want see anything from it but thinking long term my kids will have the potential increase logging value. Cheers to the long term!

Not the traditional way of establishing the reference face of a mortise pocket.
To account for the variances of concrete and plumbing my posts I’m opting to set posts and then establish my elevation in place. Plenty more work involved but I don’t want to move these posts up and down more than I have to, they’re heavy heavy.

Salvaging a couple of logs from the firewood pile.
Thanks to Andrea for having me out to mill up some of the larger red oaks in her pile of firewood. Future use to be furniture stock.
When the spring storms come through and put trees on the ground it’s a great opportunity to give them further use.

Hand peeling some 10x10x16 posts for my loft. Roughly 133 bdft in each of these posts bringing the weight in for these silver maple in at ≈510lbs each. I’ve also got one Oregon White Oak (first time seeing one of those in the yard) weighing in at ≈690lbs. All tree service take downs getting repurposed in this continued new build!

Definitely worth the trip and the saved learning curve I would have had without the knowledge shared here!

Also, class was interrupted for .002 seconds to inform us of the Giant loss of the Dolly Partons

Maybe I’ll come back ready to install my hardwood flooring.
