Another one for the sprinkler save file!

On October 3rd, an oven fire broke out on the 30th floor of a 46-story high-rise in Honolulu. By the time the Honolulu Fire Department arrived about 10 minutes later, the building's fire sprinkler system had already activated and was controlling the fire.

This is what fire sprinklers quietly deliver every day. The difference between a controlled oven fire on the 30th floor and a catastrophic high-rise incident is almost always the system installed in the ceiling.

The NFPA 25 Fire Pump Workshop is October 22-23 in Dallas, and it's the last hands-on fire pump training AFSA is running in 2026.

Two days in the AFSA Training Lab with live demonstrations of no-flow and full-flow pump tests, walkthroughs on the differences between diesel and electric fire pumps, data acquisition, supply graphing, and performance interpretation worked through on real equipment.

Today is Fire Prevention Day.

Fire Prevention Week is held around October 9 in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, a disaster that helped change the way America thought about preventing catastrophic fire loss. More than 150 years later, that work belongs to a lot of people.

🧑‍🚒 The firefighters who respond.
📚 The educators who teach prevention.
📋 The AHJs who enforce the codes.
🖥️ The designers who engineer protection.
⚙️ The fitters who install it.
🔎 The inspectors and technicians who make sure it works when needed.

Different roles all operating with one mission: protecting lives and property from fire. Today, we are proud to recognize everyone who has made that mission their profession.

If you have an old phone or device in a drawer somewhere, you may want to check on it.

The battery is on the cusp of failure if it:
⚠️ becomes unusually hot
⚠️ starts to swell or change shape
⚠️ smells strange
⚠️ leaks
⚠️ smokes
⚠️ makes popping or hissing sounds

Store batteries away from materials that can burn, and don’t throw damaged or unwanted lithium-ion batteries into household trash or regular recycling. NFPA recommends taking them to an appropriate battery recycling location.

Also, never let charging equipment or battery-powered devices block the way out of a room or home.
Prevention can sometimes make all of the difference.

Where do you charge your cell phone?

NFPA recommends charging rechargeable devices on a hard, flat surface rather than beds, pillows, couches, or other soft materials. Devices naturally produce heat while charging, and soft surfaces can trap that heat and restrict airflow.

A few more habits worth making automatic:
✅ Use the charger supplied or approved by the manufacturer.
✅ Unplug the device once it’s fully charged.
✅ Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
✅ When possible, charge larger devices like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside and away from exits.

Small habits, but they carry very real consequences.

Fire safety can start before the charger ever comes out of the box.

When buying something powered by a lithium-ion battery, look for a certification mark from a nationally recognized testing laboratory, such as UL, ETL, or CSA. That listing means the product has been evaluated against important safety standards.

Be careful with the too-good-to-be-true charger or replacement battery online. NFPA recommends using the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.

A few seconds checking the product before you buy it can eliminate a risk before it ever enters your home! If a fire does occur, working smoke alarms, an escape plan, and properly installed home fire sprinklers remain important layers of protection.
