{About Those White Lies} What seems like a quick fix is actually rooted in fear and avoidance… neither teach regulation/ coping skills and they break trust between adult/child and have long term affects on their ability to trust in future relationships. Eventually they figure it out and what then?!

👏🏼Disclaimer👏🏼 Not talking about rituals like Santa, Toothfairy, Easter Bunny… those fall into the rituals/ pretend category. I will say the less over the top you can be the better. Keep those stories simple without too many layers of fibs.

{Traveling Turtle} This shared lovie is a great option for traveling parents, shared custody etc. Children can feel connected to the away parent through the lovie. It is a great way to show them the other parent is thinking about them on their trip= always in my heart. It also provides a little laughter in tricky moments or bedtime which is the hardest part of the day when missing an away parent.

{It’s Not About Me It’s About Them} When our words and focus are placed on our child and their abilities and contributions instead of our approval we take the emphasis off needing other people’s approval and develop intrinsic motivation and confidence. Intrinsic characteristics are much more powerful and long lasting because they grow and strengthen within ourselves knowing we have and can do hard things.

Comments like “I’m proud” “I like it when…” “that makes me happy” or “make me proud” have good intent of course. However, they put pressure on our child to seek the recognition and approval of others which leads to roller coaster emotions dependent upon others’ expectations.

{Age Shaming} Sometimes can come across as a compliment or incentive to do a difficult task, however the internal narrative can be damaging over time.

When encouragement instead of manipulation is expressed our children hear we see the good in them and others and are a source of support instead of judgement.

{Mother’s Day} This day can bring up all sorts of feelings for mamas. Here’s to celebrating you and holding space for you whatever the day brings.

{Choices} Some kiddos need help bridging the gap between “I’m bored” and creative independent play especially if behaviors are getting out of hand in the process. Check out ways to give them options to jump start their play that will lead into more creative independent play. These prompts help them create a mental library they can refer back to so that they will need the visuals less and less.

Also included one for bedtime if you have multiple kiddos and need them to wait while you’re helping each one go to bed.

Visuals are so powerful for communicating in nonverbal ways. Providing these choice boards shares power in a controlled way and keeps you from having to think in your feet constantly!

{Why Not Why?!} Why asking “Why” isn’t productive and what to say instead. Focus on guiding & redirecting to build skills instead of passing blame & getting enough info to punish. When we focus on skills building and finding solutions it fuels us with positively for the next. When we focus on the negative and punishing we get sucked in a black hole that’s hard to get out of = parent burnout. Try it out!

{Kindergarten Readiness} As a previous prekindergarten teacher for 10 years I know this is a pressing issue this time of year. Read below & reach out if you have questions!

Please don’t rob them of the gift of childhood with drilling, workbooks and flash cards to impress others or to “be sure they’re ready” Exposure in fun, hands on, play-based ways is enough. (shaving cream letters, I spy, counting & sorting rocks, hopscotch numbers, nature walks, cooking etc.

Let your children be little and develop a curiosity and love of learning. Give them this gift and you will be forever thankful you spent this summer in nature exploring, laughing and learning not crying, yelling and demanding performance over play.

Again please reach out if you have questions or needs ideas! I’d love to help!
