My care provider and I were discussing the perimenopause symptoms that bother me the most when, all of the sudden, I asked, "Ok, I know this is weird, but I swear that my vision becomes extra blurry as I enter the luteal phase. Is this for real?" She assured me that it was indeed "real" and that hormonal shifts can exacerbate vision problems during perimenopause and menopause.
For me, knowing that the blurry vision was a legitimate hormonal symptom transformed confusion into action. This new piece of the puzzle prompted me to connect the dots with my pre-existing eye conditions. Armed with this knowledge, I went to my optometrist with specific questions to create a plan for my increasingly dry eyes and my keratoconus—a corneal disease that hormonal changes can also affect. It was an important step in actively managing my health through this transition, not just enduring it.
