That’s a wrap on the 2026 Chesapeake Community Research Symposium (CCRS)! 🎊

It’s always so rewarding to see the conversations and connections come to life after over a year of coordination and planning. Green Fin Studio has supported the Chesapeake Research Consortium and Chesapeake Community Modeling Program to host this biennial event since 2010, working hard to ensure that the conference runs smoothly and creates space for meaningful science and management progress.

The tenth biennial Symposium gathered over 315 attendees – an impressive record in the 20 year history of the event!

The tenth biennial Chesapeake Community Research Symposium is underway in Annapolis, MD!

More than 300 scientists, managers, and stakeholders have gathered for three days of engaging plenary speakers, robust panel discussions, and diverse session and poster presentations.

Green Fin Studio is proud to help organize the Symposium to foster new collaborations and generate thought-provoking discussions about the restoration efforts within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.

Making science accessible and actionable starts with understanding the data and the story they tell—often easier said than done. Take the status of blue crabs in the Chesapeake Bay, for example. 🦀

Two things can be true at the same time: blue crab populations have decreased by 50% since 2010, *and* blue crab populations have increased 46% since 2025. The numbers are concrete, but the takeaway is less certain.

In this case, if we were to call out the increase since last year without adding proper context, it would shift the baseline and ignore decades of population data, which could lead audiences to a false conclusion of abundance rather than the continued caution emphasized by scientists.

At Green Fin Studio, we are scientists and communicators – two other things that can be true at the same time – and we’re just as comfortable digging in the data as we are designing!

We are so excited to welcome Rosie Strickland as she joins our team as an intern this summer!

Rosie is a rising third year at the University of Virginia, majoring in Environmental Thought and Practice and English with a concentration in Literary Prose Writing. Outside of work and academics, she loves reading good books, listening to beautiful music, and being outdoors—sometimes doing all three at once!

This summer, Rosie is excited to combine her passions for storytelling and environmental change through creative communications.

"They're not making any more farmland!"

Green Fin Studio was in Southern Maryland last Friday to film landowners and land conservation practitioners. Land conservation programs protect the local rural character as well as the ecosystems contained within these tracts of land.

We loved hearing landowner stories and their motivations for putting their properties into conservation easements, and hopefully we inspire others to follow in their footsteps. Stay tuned for the full video – and in the meantime, enjoy a sneak peak of some drone footage we captured! 📷

Fusion energy is gaining some well-deserved attention in the City of Richmond, VA Government ⬇️

Yesterday, we had the opportunity to help brief Richmond Mayor Danny Avula on Commonwealth Fusion Systems groundbreaking work to make fusion power a reality, with the world’s first grid-scale plant being built in Chesterfield.

Fusion brings the power of the stars to our own backyards as a form of clean, renewable energy– the future is looking bright! ⭐

Did you know that we offer fractional support services to provide extra capacity for our clients?

Our experience in community engagement, communication strategy, and development lift organizations faster and more efficiently. One example of this is our grants management support for Gunpowder Valley Conservancy (GVC). Last week, Macon was able to visit some of their restoration and protection projects across the Gunpowder watershed. Experiences like this deepen our team’s capacity to provide grants management that is rooted in real work happening on the ground!

At this month’s learning session, we flipped the narrative from learning about the world to learning about ourselves!

To better understand our workplace strengths, Allison led our team through a deep dive of our personality traits using the Enneagram test. The results were pretty insightful.

Our team is primarily made of peacemakers ( #9) – those adept in mediation, communication, and conflict resolution. We bring the peacemaker energy to our community engagement work and help clients navigate wicked environmental topics, like flooding, nutrient pollution, and clean energy.

(You’ll also notice some perfectionist ( #1) and achiever ( #3) tendencies sprinkled in, which never hurts 😉)

The sum is greater than its parts when it comes to coastal resilience with Reefense™.🧩

Reefense™ is a living shoreline concept that uses biodegradable and low-carbon concrete modules as building blocks for artificial oyster reefs, in a mosaic of other habitats like marsh, seagrass, and mussel beds. We worked with Rutgers University and The University of Melbourne to create a conceptual diagram of this approach to living shorelines, which has since been published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)! 🎉

We are thrilled to partner with organizations working towards creative, eco-friendly solutions to coastal degradation – and we can’t wait to see where Reefense™ goes!
