Today’s spotlight: Jeffrey Stephen Barrero Villa

My name is Jeffrey Stephen Barrero Villa, born in Arlington, Virginia, but raised in Colombia South America from an infant age, until my family returned to the U.S. at the age of 17 due to the escalating dangers of the climate there. Facing the challenge of learning English without guidance, I worked multiple jobs to support myself, dedicating much of my time to work. At the age of 28, my sister introduced me to the energy industry when she worked as a Mechanical Engineer at Dominion Energy, a revelation that aligned with my technical skills and service-oriented nature. Motivated by this, I committed to improving my English and pursued a career that allowed me to thrive.

After obtaining an English as a Second Language certification and an associate's degree in Drafting and Design, I started working as a drafter in civil engineering firm. This led me to Distribution Design at a firm working with Dominion Energy, and eventually, to my dream role in Electric Transmission Substation Standards Designer at Dominion Energy. Now, as a full-time employee, I find immense joy in my work and the support of my peers.

Grateful for my journey, I wish I had known about this industry earlier. That's why I'm involved with HIE VA. I want to share, in Spanish, the fulfillment of contributing to reliable power for our communities, hoping to inspire others like me to pursue careers in this vital sector.
