What is a C-Rat?

American soldiers likely would have carried them 79 years ago in Normandy on D-Day.

The predecessor to MREs (Meal, Ready-to-Eat), the heavy WW2-era food rations, C-Rations, were a nutritious improvement from the monotonous Reserve Rations of WW1.

Created by researchers at the Quartermaster Subsistence Research and Development Laboratory in Chicago, The C-Rations were packaged in an innovative 12-ounce metal can opened with a key.

Apparently, there is a fondness/preference for C-Rats over MREs by those who enjoyed both.
