Soapbox Alert:

It was so refreshing today to talk to a leader who gets it ... who instead of trying to force a return to what they were two years ago is actually building something incredible for tomorrow.

We're talking to too many leaders of organizations that performed exceptionally well during the pandemic who are forcing some versions of RTO (and wasting a whole lot of time, energy and relationship capital) for the wrong reasons.

RTO may be the right answer for some organizations, some performers and some problems. But, let's be clear ... RTO alone does NOT cultivate culture, collaboration and collegiality ... not before before the pandemic, not now and not in the future.

So, let's stop talking about policies. Let's stop talking about virtual, hybrid, in person, work titles.

Let's recognize our shared humanity and see each other as people in living color (at work, at home, in our families, in our communities, in the check out line, in a global pandemic and on this planet).

Let's get vulnerable.

Let's explore what trust, compassion, inclusivity, coaching, development, respect, accountability, winning, etc. can look like for the future.

Let's embrace the creativity of the pandemic and be willing to explore ALL the ways that we can be intentional connectors and effective leaders and put our energy behind what will be most impactful.

Let's stop asking what will work best for us as leaders and listen to what our teams are asking of us to be their best.

Talking to each other more about what we're needing as humans and not just as [insert role] could be very meaningful at the individual, team and organizational levels. As you are reconnecting and weighing the importance of community, also consider and discuss how "collective effervescence" plays a role in our wellness.

We find our greatest bliss in moments of “collective effervescence.”

Here's an article that does a good job articulating how and why this period of "return to work" isn't unifying in the way the "work from home" transition was and how it is potentially disastrous.

Willing things to get back to pre-pandemic normal isn't going to work. We're still very much in uncharted territory. And, if we're in the midst of a transformation to something that is healthier, more equitable and more sustainable ... we have miles and miles of uncertainty and disruption to go.

Leaders have an opportunity to be vulnerable, courageous and compassionate in ways they may never have been before. It might be exactly what we all need.

Returning to a hybrid office could be even more damaging than the move to fully remote work, writes the former HR chief at Google. Here’s how to get it right.

Last week we facilitated our first in person retreat in well over a year and it was everything we had been dreaming of. We've been working with the the MCV Foundation team for several years and it is an honor to guide this incredible group of humans on their leadership journey. The day was a celebration of leadership, teamwork and connection. And, VCU Rice Rivers Center never disappoints.

In these days and times, it is especially important to look for the bright spots. Today's bright spot ... having a client share this little guy on a zoom call ... every leadership team working towards clarity and alignment on an important topic should be accompanied by a puppy!

As I was wrapping up another zoom session (and procrastinating writing a report), I found myself staring into the fish tank. Their world is so calm ... they stick together and do not move to the other side of the tank as they cross paths.

I sat there, uncomfortable in the quiet, and took in all of the surroundings ... the empty bar (missing the chatter of our favorite, very loud, wonderful and delightfully obnoxious clients and friends), clean walls (missing their post-it notes and scribbles from a recent Morning Catch, brainstorm or planning session), empty chairs (34 happen to be vacant at the moment) and empty bin (missing our travel folders ... no planes or trains booked ... unfathomable).
