You turned on MFA. Great. Now don’t hand it right back to the bad guys.

If your phone suddenly asks you to approve a login you didn’t start, that’s not a glitch. It could mean someone already has your username and password, and the only thing standing between them and your account is you tapping “Approve.” Attackers count on people doing it just to make the notification go away. Some will spam you with request after request until you do.

Your password is probably already for sale somewhere.

The good news? A stolen password doesn’t have to mean a stolen account. Multi-factor authentication adds a second step to logging in, like an app notification or a security code, and that one extra step can stop a criminal cold even when they already know your password.

Yesterday our team spent some time at Maymont, where we enjoyed a tour of the Robins Nature Center and the Virginia Wildlife Trail!

Someone stuck a fake QR code over the pay-to-park sign outside the Starbucks on Main Street downtown. Our COO Eric Clary scanned it, and the site asked for his name, address, phone number, and credit card.

He caught it. A lot of people wouldn’t have.

Eric sat down with Virginia This Morning on CBS 6 to kick off Cybersecurity Awareness Month and talk about the scams hitting Richmond right now: fake QR codes, AI voice clones that can sound exactly like your boss, and the “do this right now” pressure that gets people to act before they think.

His advice: if someone is pushing you to act immediately, stop. Hang up and call them back on a number you already know.

"𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸𝘀. 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀."

That one sentence cost a Richmond charity more than $30,000 in March. The email looked like it came from a vendor they already worked with. Nobody broke through a firewall. Nobody cracked a password. Someone just did what a very normal-looking email asked.

That's why our Cybersecurity Awareness Month message this year is simple: 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲. Your team responds to emails, approves invoices, and communicates with vendors. Remind them to slow down and verify, as they are your best line of defense.
