📚 For the past 8 years, I’ve had the joy of illustrating + designing 36 books in partnership with my former college roommate, professional educator, consultant, and author Lisa Combs. She wrote every single one of these stories, and together we’ve built a world of characters and adventures that we’re so proud to share.

From the first sketch to the finished layout, each book has been a reminder of what friendship and creative collaboration can bring to life. Here are some of my favorites from our journey so far ✨

Here's a new character for the upcoming Halloween book, plus a couple new (and updated) illustrations. I was having issues with the "p-nut butter" costume — and it just wasn't reading correctly. Also, sorta a no-go to use "Jif" as part of the costume. What do you think? I already see that there needs to be some adjustments to the chesse burger costume on the cover...

Current Project - Halloween-themed kids' book and book two of a series:

New chapter, new season! One of my favorite parts of being an illustrator is watching a story come alive through color, texture, and detail.

I just wrapped up the first book in this series and now I'm diving into the Halloween follow-up (finished illustrations coming soon).

This project came along when my dear friend, and artist, Larry Sexton (and former head librarian at Union City Public Library) sent someone my way who was interested in self-publishing their first kids' book. Sometimes these introductions don't always click. This one hit my wheelhouse of illustrating animal characters.

First photo is the cover for the finished book. The second two photos show my planning sketches and a draft cover for the next one. I can't wait to share more glimpses along the way.

Stay tuned later this week when I talk Best Friend Books, an 8+ year collaboration with my friend, educator, consultant, author, and former Ball State roommate, Lisa Combs.

These are the messy planning sketches for my next children's book illustration project. They don't look like much. At the same time, this step is necessary for me.

Next, I'll start the final illustrations in Adobe Illustrator and place them in the final layout along with the text 😀

I think I have the final sketch for a friend's garage door. She asked for poppies and tulips. She has two garage doors so this first one will be mostly poppies, with some purple tulips in the background. When I paint the 2nd door, I'll make the tulips more prominent.

Tomorrow may be the last warm/nice day, so I may be finishing the project in the Spring.

Fingers crossed!😀

Here are some more paintings and prints that we received to feature in our month-long celebration of the macabre from Sedona artist, Sribs Am. A dear friend forwarded samples of his work several weeks ago. I was immediately taken by their bold expressionistic look and raw, emotional color combinations—I knew I had to have some of his work for Night Gallery!

We believe that all genres and types of art should be represented in our gallery, and we're especially excited to be the first gallery in our area to feature his work!

In this exhibit, we will have paintings, drawings, decorative items, sculptures, and photographs—traditional, expressionistic, abstract—Something for everyone!

Check back here in the next couple of weeks for more glimpses inside the Art Depot's first annual Night Gallery!

Join us for the Opening Reception for Selena Burk's "Down the Road" Collection.

THIS FRIDAY, September 6, 5:30 pm in our Main Gallery.
115 N. Howard Street, Union City, IN

Down the Road" is an exhibit featuring familiar(and sometimes forgotten) locations in Randolph County.

One of the fascinating features included in this exhibit is each painting is accompanied by her reference photos, sketches, paint swatches, and stories.

Here's what Selena says about her inspiration for this collection:
"While driving around the countryside one evening, I realized that there were many little places that were once small towns. Many trips later, I thought of the phrase "down the road." Oftentimes, in my youth, and even now, people use this phrase when giving directions. I started taking many trips, locating places of interest and small towns where a few items from the past remain."
