The power of the pause.

Taking time away from the office may feel like a discretionary expense, one you can’t afford. What if instead we considered the return on an investment like this? Or perhaps the opportunity cost if we don’t?

Kudos to Lerch, Early and Brewer for recognizing just this. After experiencing significant growth, almost doubling the number of attorneys at the firm in less than 3 years, it was time to take a pause for connection and celebration.

This experience was an important reminder that investing in relationships with our fellow team members is a key part of organizational health.

It was an honor to co-facilitate the firm’s 2024 retreat alongside Rebecca Edwards Hnatowski, where we had a chance to build connection, explore critical conversations and collaborate in future growth. Excited to see what comes next for this terrific team!

January 2017, I made the decision to begin a new chapter in my life and career. My first stop was in Chesapeake, Virginia, where I spent a week with my niece . We were both working through change, challenge and growth. I didn’t know exactly what my next step would be, but I knew it would center around gratitude.

Piper shared my excitement about what this work could look like, and was one of the first people (after of course!) with whom I shared the name of this venture – Esprit de Merci.

A couple of years later, she officially joined our team and we had the opportunity to connect even more frequently.
We are so grateful for all of Piper’s many contributions to Esprit de Merci over these past few years. She has participated in the design of our internal communications strategy, supported virtual facilitation of a team workshop, and led our 2020 community engagement project in support of the She has been an outstanding thinking partner and team member embodying our purpose, mission, vision and values.

And now she’s kicking off her first week ! As with any change, this one is bittersweet … We will miss her presence on our team calls and her many contributions to our work. We are also looking forward to the future she designs.

Today is World IBD Day, and an opportunity to celebrate and support one of our fantastic team members, Piper Gill. We’d love your help!

After months of increasing and at times debilitating symptoms, Piper was diagnosed with Pediatric Crohn’s Disease (a form of IBD, or inflammatory bowel disease) in October of 2020. Crohn’s is an autoimmune disease with many physical challenges including medications, side effects, painful and unpredictable flares and hospital stays. As this often means missing out on favorite meals, activities and special events, Crohn’s takes a toll on mental and emotional health as well.

In Piper’s words, “Learning you have a life-long inflammatory condition is scary, but with the support of an amazing care team, incredible family members, and understanding friends, I’ve been able to learn ways to adjust my lifestyle and make Crohn’s disease a part of my life instead of it completely overtaking my life.”

Piper serves as an advocate for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, helping to accelerate progress towards a cure and improve the quality of life for those affected by IBD.

She’s also leading a team called Gill’s Got Guts as part of the organization’s Take Steps fundraising campaign. This event brings the community together in a fun, family-friendly and supportive atmosphere so patients know they are not alone.

The past week has been a time for rest, reflection, exploration, disconnecting, reconnecting, learning, play, creation, laughter, exploration and celebration.

Andalusia is truly a special place, once known as the “ornament of the world”. The history of this region can teach us a lot about ourselves today, and inspire us to design a future to honor and embrace our differences with a vision and spirit of a greater humanity.

Shukran and muchas gracias to all who made this such an amazing trip, including (Alejandro and Carlos - we LOVED our home away from home!), (Esther you are amazing!), (wow, just wow David and Arancha! 🤗), our traveling companions and , and last but not least for always challenging me to new heights and cheering me along the way.

May the adventures continue!

Last Friday, we had the wonderful opportunity of being a part of ’s small business expo, where our amazing team member represented Esprit de Merci. It was great to finally network in person and meet other small business owners who also share a deep appreciation for the Jackson Ward and Richmond communities.

We look forward to furthering our connections with local businesses as we ourselves continue to grow and find new collaborative initiatives within the community.

A year ago, and I moved back to Richmond, Virginia. We’ve enjoyed reconnecting with friends and family and we’re also excited to expand our community and continue to broaden our perspective. A lot of great things are happening here, and it’s inspiring to be part of the evolution of this great city.

Yesterday, the Esprit de Merci team had our first meeting together in nearly a year!🎉🥂
Although it was virtual, it was wonderful seeing everyone's smiling faces, including our amazing new team member, Karen Clark.

We reflected on the past, looked at our present goals, and set our sights for an exciting upcoming year.

It was wonderful to start the day off with so much positive energy and creative collaboration!

We look forward to many more team meetings and opportunities to work with one another!

Today we celebrate one of our terrific team members, Piper Gill, as she completes her 16th cycle around the sun.

We are so grateful for her many contributions - from leading our 2020 community fundraiser, to collaboration and support for our workshops, and researching new tools and sharing ideas. She brings positivity and authentic curiosity to all that she does, and we are better for it!
