Friday evening as many were getting ready to start their holiday weekend, a large st******nt swept across the Midwest.

No tornado sirens happened at 240mph winds came pushing through neighborhoods. It wasn't a tornado it was a derecho, inland hurricane.

Trees were snapped in half like toothpicks, people had damage to their homes, businesses had the roofs ripped off their buildings and playground equipment was tossed like it was never anchored in the ground.

The local animal shelter lost power while at capacity with dogs and cats.

Washington County Illinois looked like a warzone and a state of emergency was declared.

Nashville Illinois lost power and are scheduled to have full service by Thursday.

Saturday morning neighbors joined forces in these small towns to help clean up. Local business ran their generators and set up cooling stations, handed out bottled water and food.

Other shelters nearby answered the call for help and found fosters for kittens, places for puppies and other dogs that otherwise would have been in a building with no AC.

Saturday evening the storms came again this time with threats of tornados.

Cleanup resumed on Sunday and will continue for weeks.

Today is July 4th. Instead of celebrating with fireworks, BBQ or playing in the local pool... neighbors are still cleaning up, tarping roofs, and helping each other; linemen, for the utility companies, are working all day and night to restore power to these communities.
