Expecting parents and postpartum parents have a lot on their mind and might not know about this.
For all the postpartum doulas out there that go in the families homes, remind them about this safety tip.

-keep alarm clear of curtains, furniture or decor that could block airflow.
-ceiling mounting works best since smoke rises but wall mounting 4-12 inches from ceiling is also effective.

I wanted to post a picture of a crib in the nursery but all the pictures I was seeing there was something “unsafe” about it.
First the basics-nothing in the crib/bassinet like blanket, pillow, stuffed animal, crib bumper and nothing hanging on the crib. But also, let’s avoid having anything over the sleeping area like shelf, picture frame/painting, hanging object… If crib/bassinet was a hand me down check if it has been recalled. Does the mattress fit snug in the crib (meaning there shouldn’t be more than 2 fingers gap between the mattress and the rails)?
I know a newborn won’t be able to do much, but they grow in a blink of an eye-is there an outlet, curtain, shade string, camera that can be reached/pulled?
When baby is sleeping unattended make sure the dog or cat are off limits.
Your postpartum doula is very serious about sleep safety.

Found this breastfeeding log from my first baby. 2 days old, first day at home: 30 minutes latched on left b**b and then 30 minutes latched on right b**b😳 no wonder my ni***es were destroyed. Baby not only had an undiagnosed tongue/lip/cheek ties but had a shallow latch. I had no idea what I was doing but I did it and then things got better. Baby and I figured it out. Things we didn’t know as a first time parent…
My second baby’s experience breastfeeding was SO much better. Second baby came to heal my bf journey.

One thing I wish every expecting families would do was to plan ahead postpartum meals. When you come home after delivery, the priority is to rest and heal. For some families, planing means having a freezer stocked with meals. For other families might mean someone else will do the cooking for them (family members, meal train, postpartum doula, ordering in…) Prep as much you can before hand so it’s one thing you don’t have to worry right away. 🫶🏻💖
