Guest Myra Rich is a retired Associate Professor of History at the University of Colorado, Denver. She joined Karen and Elizabeth on the Women's Mosaic to talk about the American women who relentlessly pursued women's suffrage inspired by a desire to raise women's status, safety, power and legal freedoms through legal equality, a struggle which continues today.

In Part 1 Professor Rich sets the stage with the Seneca Falls Convention - the event that launched the movement - and reveals much of the seminal history of the movement and the incredible courage and sacrifices made by the women who participated. She helps us understand how white, African American and other ethnic and religious women became engaged in suffrage as well as other social movements of the time.

In Part 2 she brings us on a journey through time that culminates with a probing examination of the challenging issues and concerns contemporary women face today and where to look for hope.

Some important legislation made it to Governor Inslee's desk. My thanks to the legislators who worked so hard this session. Here's just one important common sense step forward for Washington state:

"Democratic lawmakers pushed a few tougher gun laws past Republican opposition to the finish line. One will ban open carrying of fi****ms in parks, bus stations, libraries, zoos, aquariums and local government buildings. Another delivered to the governor requires gun owners to report the loss or theft of a firearm to law enforcement within 24 hours of discovering their weapon is gone. A third imposes new rules on firearm dealers concerning security and surveillance systems, and requirements that employees be at least 21 years old."

Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on 30 January 1948 at age 78 in central New Delhi on his way to lead evening prayer. His assassin was Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist. Gandhi's sons both pleaded for the assassin and his accomplice's death sentences to be commuted. They understood spiritually, even during their own pain, that justifiable anger is not a justification for state homicide. Israel needs to call a ceasefire to protect innocent civilian Palestinians and their right to life. The Hamas leaders, planners and perpetrators of the horrific Hamas acts of terror are only empowered by the slaughter of civilians in Gaza.
