Why should you hire a designer? One of the most common questions I get from people who have never hired an interior designer before is, “Why should I hire one?” I think this is by far the best question you can ask when contemplating the design of your space. There are many misconceptions about what an interior designer does and how their expertise can benefit you. Many people assume only extremely wealthy individuals with loads of disposable income hire designers to revamp their second and third houses just for the heck of it. While that is certainly true for some, that is actually not the primary reason most people hire interior designers. Here are three common reasons most people hire an interior designer and see the value in it:
1. You don’t have time to do it yourself. Many people underestimate how much time is actually involved when deciding upon a design vision, taking precise measurements, determining how to “work” the space, selecting and shopping for materials, coordinating with vendors and general contractors (if you’re working on a new build or remodel), and finally, putting it all together. Did I just give you a headache thinking about that list? I love taking the load off a client and making these intimate intricacies come together without burdening them with all the manpower it takes to execute their dream. It’s so rewarding, and I'm told often this reason alone is enough to justify hiring a designer!
2. You need help pulling your vision together or need help discovering your vision. Have you ever walked into an empty or outdated room and wondered how you’re going to “work” the space and make your room look and feel like home? How about purchasing a 5,000 square foot home and wondering how on earth you will choose the right paint, flooring and furniture that will feel cohesive throughout the home? It can be really challenging to make your “dream theme” come together in real life! That’s what interior designers are for. We come in, listen to your desires and make sure you see it come to life in a practical yet beautiful way. Our goal is not to make you implement the latest trends or our own personal taste. We know your space is your space and we want you to enjoy every crack and crevice of it! If you are unsure of the direction you’d like to go, that’s OK too! Hiring an experienced professional allows the busy, inexperienced or indifferent client to sit back and let me take the wheel from start to finish.
3. You want to save and/or make money. One of the perks of hiring a designer is that oftentimes you are offered special rates on furnishings, accessories and custom details. Many vendors offer discounts to “trade” members, which can oftentimes be extended to you. I love the look of surprise on the faces of my clients when we get the opportunity to save them hundreds or even thousands of dollars! Another way I frequently see clients save money is by avoiding making costly mistakes. There are many challenges when designing a room, office or home. The mishaps experienced by a few past clients come to mind: overpriced vendors, faulty paint or flooring selections, incorrect measurements on space and custom pieces, wallpaper mishaps, etc. What’s better than saving money? Making money! One of my favorite tasks is getting to work alongside homeowners who are looking to stage their home to sell it. Most are amazed at how much money they can make by rearranging furniture, painting a few walls and selecting psychologically calming colors in their home. I have seen many homeowners increase their sale price and/or avoid reducing their price against a hard economy, simply because the details of their home became more aesthetically pleasing to the average eye. Hiring a designer can oftentimes increase your home value, increase showings and ultimately help your home sell faster!
