BREAKING! This photo, sent to me today by L.C. and Sharon Cripps, was taken by Tommy Eason in 1984, and it shows former Catoosa Deputy Sheriff L.C. Cripps doing his job, levying on a judgement that was in a stack of papers to execute that day. L.C. asked Tommy Eason if he wanted to ride along. The van subject to the levy was one 1977 Chevrolet van, the property of Alvin E. Ridley. This sparked a sense of injustice with Alvin, who was smart to challenge the taking, and won! But when L.C. tried to return it, Alvin refused to “accept” it back! Almost 41 years now untouched, it became the obsession that I had to deal with in 1997-1999 while representing our “Zenith Man” Alvin Ridley!

I’m honored that Zenith Man: Death, Love, and Redemption in a Georgia Courtroom was nominated today for Georgia Author of the Year, in the Memoir category.

It’s humbling to be listed alongside such powerful and personal stories by my fellow nominees.

I hope this brings more attention to Alvin Ridley’s journey, and to the many others with undiagnosed developmental disabilities who have been misunderstood or misjudged.

Thank you to the Georgia Writers Association for this recognition.

Former U.S. Congressman and former Georgia Governor Nathan Deal kept popping into my book as I wrote it. He was a big part of the story - whipping me in my last political race hard enough to keep me from coming back, then inspiring me to spitefully stick with Alvin’s case by calling and ordering me to keep my client away from his district office.
Today we shared a microphone for the first time in 29 years, at the Dahlonega Literary Festival, where he gave an emotional tribute to his late wife, Sandra.
Apparently, we both feature two cats in our books: “Veto” and “Bill” Deal, the governor’s cats, and of course “Kitty” and “Meowy” Ridley, Alvin’s cats. Maybe that’s the way to bridge the political divide, with cats.

These nice ladies from Summerville (Chattooga County) Georgia, had a field trip to Ringgold today to ask questions after reading “Zenith Man: Death, Love, and Redemption in a Georgia Courtroom” in their book club. They were great!
