KinniConsortium Kinni Consortium links UWRF research with external organizations and engages the public with watershed issues.

The Kinnickinnic River, designated as an “Outstanding Resource Water” by the Wisconsin Legislature, faces ongoing pressures and changes related to land use, population growth, environmental degradation, and climate change. In response, a multitude of scientific research has been initiated at various locations throughout the watershed in an effort to understand these issues and promote sustainabili

ty and resilience. However, the large number of projects across multiple fields of inquiry has made it difficult to be aware of what is being done where and by whom, coordinate research interests, and engage the community about the magnitude of work being done. Successful coordination of research and integration of scientific findings into management practices hinges on trusted relationships between stakeholders and UWRF researchers to identify existing projects, information needs, and how information is to be delivered. Thus, the goal of the Kinni Watershed Consortium (KWC) is to link campus-wide social-ecological research efforts taking place at UWRF with external agencies or organizations, actively communicate with the public about watershed issues, and provide undergraduate students opportunities to learn and practice research skills.

Last week was the highlight of our summer internship experience. We were able to explore with and teach a younger generation about the St. Croix watershed, agriculture, the natural functions of our environment and how they all tie in together.

This past week, we were invited to learn about industrial h**p with the Kinni H**p Co. At their farm, they taught us the multitude of goods that can be produced through industrial h**p, how the plant grows, and we also learned about the large amount of support from the community. Our interns, Laura and Jeremiah were able to help transplant seedlings as well as plant the seeds. We also collected soil samples for the farmers to assess the health of their soil.

The Kinnickinnic River was listed as one of the 10 most endangered rivers. Please come discuss your ideas about the future of the watershed at the Kinni Watershed Community Forum, April 24 from 5-8pm at Junior's Bar and Restaurant.

America’s Most Endangered Rivers® highlights ten rivers whose fate will be decided in the coming year, and encourages decision-makers to do the right thing for the rivers and the communities they support.

Reminiscing about camp last week - we had a great group of boys this year!

We are having a great time with our Pathfinders summer camp this week! Yesterday, campers got to dress up in beekeeping suits and investigate the CNC bee hives close up. A big thanks to Tom Kieffer and his colleagues for coming out and teaching our campers about beekeeping and the importance of pollinators. We had a lot of fun!
