This post may seem "late," but I don't think so. I've taken some time to reflect before commenting out of sheer heartbreak and the need to approach with utmost sensitivity.

Events like the recent tragedy in Lewiston, Maine, remind us of the unpredictability and fragility of life. Our condolences and thoughts are with the victims' families. We stand with the community, hoping to be part of the bigger solution to prevent such incidents in the future.

In the face of such a devastating event, it's challenging to find the words that could possibly express the collective grief and sorrow we all feel. A seemingly regular evening, intended for family fun, turned into an absolute nightmare. As we grapple with this reality, it's imperative to think about how we, as a society, can come together to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities.

I wish there were easy answers, but the solution is complex. Much like the intricate fabric of our communities, the approach to ensuring safety is multifaceted and requires a deep understanding of individual dynamics. Every institution, be it a school, church, business, or community center, brings its unique set of challenges and needs. It's not about implementing a one-size-fits-all solution but about recognizing the uniqueness of each situation and tailoring our approach accordingly. There's no copy-and-paste option.

In our experience, we've found no two situations are the same, and neither are the strategies to address them. Different organizations have unique characteristics, cultures, and needs. One might be grappling with access control issues, while another might need better crisis communication systems. Some may require in-depth training, while others might need technological upgrades. True security is holistic, and it evolves based on feedback, learning, and adaptation.

In light of tragedies like Lewiston's, it becomes even more crucial for us all to acknowledge that while there are no easy fixes, there are dedicated individuals and organizations willing to invest time, expertise, and heart into crafting solutions that can make a difference.

Military experience is foundational to the work we do at Shield Strategic Defense. The Army provided me with unique insights, advanced training, and firsthand exposure to complex security environments, equipping me to effectively assess security risks today.

As a veteran, my time as an Infantryman and Field Artillery officer taught me to think critically, react swiftly, and plan meticulously. But perhaps the most important lesson was understanding the importance of security and the role it plays in safeguarding lives and assets.

However, I understand that sometimes, the notion of military experience can be intimidating or perceived as overly intense. "Tough guy stuff" just isn't our style. That's why at Shield, we are committed to approachability, calm, and clarity in our work. Oftentimes, I get the comment, "You don't seem like the typical (fill in the blank with Army or West Point stereotypes)." We communicate in a language that is easy to understand and applicable to the reality of our clients' situations.

We bring military-grade rigor and thoroughness to our risk assessments, security blueprints, and training, but without the military jargon or intensity.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, a significant number of mass shootings in the U.S. occurred during the summer months in recent years. The reasons behind this seasonal trend are complex and varied, but one fact is clear - our collective vigilance and commitment to security is crucial regardless of the season.

Moreover, workplace violence is an ever-present concern, irrespective of the time of year. OSHA reports that nearly 2 million American workers are victims of workplace violence each year, and the Department of Justice have found violence to be a leading cause of fatal injuries at work with about 1,000 workplace homicides each year.

As sobering as these statistics may be, we can work together to create safer environments.
