It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of the co-founder of Stage Sound, Grant Ellis who passed away on Monday, February 9th.

Grant, and our mutual friend Bobby Francis, were the initial visionaries behind Stage Sound. Over the following years, Grant became a mentor and an inspiration to many in the community, especially to me. Founded in the late 70’s, Stage Sound was built on Bobby’s love for gadgetry and Grant’s passion for music and his instincts for entrepreneurship. His impact on our company and the industry will be felt for years to come.

Our thoughts are with Grant’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

As we navigate this loss in our lives, Stage Sound remains dedicated to honoring Grant’s vision and preserving his legacy. He was a very good friend

Sincerely,

Reid Henion

Our Production Team is kicking the year off with our friends at Carter Machinery! We just completed the production of their annual kick-off event at The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center.

This production was centered around a 5-screen design with a custom ultra-wide logo. We always enjoy a challenge and the opportunity to make your vision come true!

Many thanks to the team from Carter and our event technicians who worked long hours to make this event come to life!

🎛️ Before modern line arrays … the earliest concert sound systems were walls. 🔊...Came across this killer late-70s arena photo and it sent us straight down a rabbit hole...Pic is classic horn-loaded, ground-stacked touring PA goodness...big folded bass bins down low, mid/low-mid horns for punch, and that top-end horn “sizzle” for throw....looks like a 4-way system...No flying, no prediction software… just physics and a crew with good ears....the image was tagged "Van Halen '79" so possibly Showco’s older “Pyramid System” era?...if you know the exact system, tour, or boxes… hit the comments 👇...Also: Shout-out to the era when production staff were rocking jeans and hair (shirt optional) instead of matching corporate polos? Iconic. 🤘 N**E Microphones - We love Listening!

Stage Sound and the 1985 Flood

It has been 40 years since the "Election Day Floods" on Nov. 5th, 1985 in Roanoke.
I had worked for Stage Sound for just over a year at that time. The rain had not stopped for several days and it had been pouring rain all morning. Bobby Francis (founding member) and I left for lunch and came back to the flood waters rapidly entering the building. It was a mad rush just getting everyone out. It was too late to save anything. Keep in mind, to the best of our knowledge, this area had never flooded so it was a complete surprise to everyone.
Later that night, Doug Thurman and I made our way back over to the hill behind the business just to check out the damage… looking down on the building, all we could see, was a little square outline of the roof. There was approximately 13 feet of water around the building.
After the waters receded, I spent the next month in waders digging through the mud and the debris trying to sort out what was left. It was devastating; we lost everything, gear and trucks included. We moved into a new location a few streets up and started the company back up, from scratch, all over again.
